The Green Bay Packers are planning on Malik Willis to start at quarterback on Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts. Jordan Love did not practice on Wednesday because of an MCL sprain.
However, the coaching staff is leaving the door open to let Love play on Sunday against the Colts, but don’t count on him playing. It will be interesting to see how Malik Willis operates in the Green Bay Packers offense.
Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox Thinks That the Green Bay Packers Could Be In Play For Former Second Overall Pick Zach Wilson
Zach Wilson was the second-overall pick by the New York Jets in the 2021 NFL Draft out of BYU. Things did not work out for him with the Jets, so he was traded to the Denver Broncos this offseason. Wilson is not even starting for Denver and rookie Bo Nix is the Broncos starter. Jarrett Stidham is Denver’s backup.
According to Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox, he thinks that Zach Wilson could very well be traded at the NFL trade deadline. Knox thinks that the New York Giants and the Green Bay Packers could very well be in play to acquire the former BYU Cougars quarterback. Knox said:
“The Packers won’t have Love for the immediate future and might need a new quarterback to navigate the next few weeks. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Packers “have not reached out and are not expected” to pursue a veteran signal-caller at this time. That stance could change, however, depending on how backup Malik Willis fares in Week 2.”
Wilson has a lot more potential to be the backup quarterback for the Green Bay Packers moving forward than Malik Willis. However, let’s see how Willis plays after a game before making that judgment.
Career Numbers
Wilson has shown some flashes of potential throughout his NFL career, but he might be a case where he is someone’s backup quarterback on a year-to-year basis. In his NFL career so far, Zach Wilson has completed 57.0% of his passes for 6,293 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 25 touchdowns.
Wilson has worked with a defensive head coach in Robert Saleh. Maybe things would be different with him if he had an offensive-minded head coach with Matt LaFleur. Zach Wilson would be an interesting fit as a potential backup option for Jordan Love.
