Green Bay Packers safety Xavier McKinney was tremendous in his first season with the team after signing a four-year deal in free agency. Before coming to the Packers, McKinney was with the New York Giants.
He was named to the Pro Bowl this past season at the safety position for the NFC. Xavier McKinney recorded 88 tackles, one sack, one fumble recovery, eight interceptions, and 11 pass deflections. He hopes to be great again in year two with Green Bay.
Green Bay Packers Safety Xavier McKinney Reacts To Being Snubbed As AP Defensive Player Of the Year Finalist
All of the NFL awards will be handed out in two weeks from today on Thursday, February 6 at 8 p.m. CT. All of the AP Awards for the NFL Honors have been announced. For Defensive Player of the Year, Xavier McKinney was not one of the five finalists for the award.
Zach Baun of the Philadelphia Eagles, T.J. Watt of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Patrick Surtain of the Denver Broncos, Trey Hendrickson of the Cincinnati Bengals, and Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns are the finalists. Xavier McKinney was not a finalist and he expressed his frustration on Twitter and said:
“No safety nominees on DPOY . Crazy work”
It is not a surprise to see Surtain, Garrett, or Hendrickson on this list for the 2024 NFL season. However, there is a major case for Xavier McKinney to be a finalist over T.J. Watt and Zach Baun this year. It is a major disappointment that McKinney was snubbed over those two players. Watt made the list because of his reputation, not necessarily because of his stats. He wasn’t even Top 5 in the league in sacks this season.

If Trey Hendrickson wins the award, then what one of the Green Bay Packers fans said is true. Trey Hendrickson finished the season with 17.5 sacks this NFL season. McKinney would not have the award this season, but it was a shame he wasn’t even a finalist for it.
