During the offseason, the Green Bay Packers signed safety Xavier McKinney to a four-year contract. He played with the New York Giants before coming to Green Bay.
In Sunday’s 30-14 win against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday afternoon on the road, McKinney recorded another interception. He picked off Will Levis in the fourth quarter. Green Bay is 2-1 on the season and Tennessee is 0-3 on the season.
Xavier McKinney now has three interceptions this season. The team has seven total interceptions this season. Green Bay only had seven total interceptions a season ago.
Green Bay Packers Safety Xavier McKinney Makes Massive Announcement After the Win
There was a reason why the Packers signed McKinney this offseason and also why Giants fans wanted general manager Joe Schoen to bring him back. Green Bay fans have to be happy that General Manager Brian Gutekunst signed him in the offseason to that big deal.
After the game was over McKinney spoke to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic. Xavier McKinney said about being on the Packers now:
“I’m ecstatic. This a great team, great organization. We got a great coaching staff, just great all around. Being in the building has been great. The fans are amazing and then we got a whole bunch of guys that are just hungry.”
It is a huge deal that the Packers defense is playing with an edge this season. This is a defense that wants to force turnovers and give the ball back to their offense. Not only did McKinney have an interception, but cornerback Jaire Alexander also had a 35-yard pick-six in the first quarter for Green Bay.
McKinney Is Setting Goals For Himself This Season
With the way the former Alabama Crimson Tide safety is playing in the first three games of the 2024 NFL season, there is a chance that he may not only be a Pro Bowl player, but he could also be an All-Pro. Last week, Keisean Nixon was mic’d up and McKinney mentioned to him that he wants seven interceptions this season.
With already having three interceptions, Schneidman asked does three interceptions in three games change that goal? McKinney responded:
“We gon’ keep that goal the same right now, but I’m tryna get as many as possible.”
It is good that he is setting individual goals for himself, along with putting the team first. The Packers defense has not had an effective safety like this since Nick Collins. Xavier McKinney was the ball-hawking safety they were missing this whole time.
