Former Green Bay Packers WR Believes This Team Is a Super Bowl Contender

The last time the Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl was the 2010 NFL season. That team went 10-6 and needed to win its final two games in order to put itself into a position to make the postseason. Thankfully, they got some help from the Philadelphia Eagles and DeSean Jackson, who returned a punt for a touchdown to win a game against the New York Giants in Week 15.

By beating New York the following week and then beating the NFC North Champions, the Chicago Bears in Week 17, Green Bay’s record and tie breakers were just enough to earn the last wild card spot in the NFC.

The Packers then went on to win three road games in the NFL Playoffs against the Eagles, Atlanta Falcons, and Bears. Of course, Aaron Rodgers then led the team to victory in Super Bowl XLV, taking home the game’s MVP Award and cementing himself as one of Green Bay’s all-time greatest players despite being in just his third season as the starting quarterback.

One of the many talented wide receivers on that Super Bowl-winning Packers roster was James Jones, who was in his fourth season with the team at that time. During that season, he had 50 receptions for 679 yards and five touchdowns. In the Super Bowl itself, he had five receptions for 50 yards.

The strength of that team, though, was its defense. Led by great players like Charles Woodson, Clay Matthews, and Nick Collins, the Green Bay defense forced 35 turnovers that year (24 interceptions and 11 fumble recoveries).

That year, the Packers defense ranked fifth in yards allowed per game (309.1) and second in points allowed per game (15.0).

Additionally, Green Bay’s offense was, despite losing running back Ryan Grant in Week One, was able to rack up 1,606 rushing yards to balance out their potent passing attack.

Now, as a football analyst for FS1, Jones is a daily co-host of the show “The Facility.” In one of their most recent episodes, he explained why he believes this year’s Packers team has what it takes to win the Super Bowl:

“We are built like the Eagles: running game and defense.”@89JonesNTAF believes his Packers can beat anyone in the playoffs 👀 pic.twitter.com/8OiAbOa10r

“With Jordan Love being healthy, the Green Bay Packers can walk into the playoffs and beat any team in the playoffs. We have a really good defense, we have a really good running back. Well, we have a great running back in Josh Jacobs. We have really, really, really good wide receivers, and its one through four wide receivers.

“We have a really good tight end, and we just got another really good tight end back in Luke Musgrave, who was one of our best players last year. We’re getting healthy, our quarterback is playing at a really high level, and I don’t think our defense gets enough credit.

“We are built like the Philadelphia Eagles. Running game, might be a little bit better quarterback play. The receivers is better in Philly, but our receivers can ball and make plays too. And we have defense. And our offensive line is good too.”

He went on to say that all of those things add up to a Super Bowl winning team.

    Hopefully he is right!
