The Green Bay Packers have the 15th overall pick in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. With that pick, they could take any number of players as they have multiple positions of need. One of these positions is at wide receiver. Of course, last year the Packers drafted three wide receivers: Christian Watson (second round), Romeo Doubs (fourth round), and Samori Toure (seventh round). However, with the possible departures of Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb via free agency, the Packers find themselves in need of wide receivers. In this latest mock draft on NFL.com, Green Bay addresses their need at wide receiver prior to any other need on their roster in the first round.
The Green Bay Packers Select Jaxon Smith-Njigba with the 15th Overall Pick
Will the Green Bay Packers use their first round pick (15th overall) on a wide receiver? As everyone knows, they have not done so since 2002 (Javon Walker). Perhaps a better question is will they use a first round pick on a wide receiver who played in three games and recorded just five receptions in 2022?
Now, there is no doubt that Jaxon Smith-Njigba is a fine wide receiver. In 2021, as a sophomore, he did have 95 receptions for 1,606 yards and nine touchdowns. On a team that featured current NFL studs Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave, Smith-Njigba was the leading receiver.
So to answer the question posed, will Green Bay use their first round pick on a wide receiver who missed most of 2022 to injury, the answer is “maybe.” If there was any wide receiver to take that risk on, it would be Smith-Njigba. However, with so many other holes on the roster (safety, tight end, defensive line, edge rusher), it will not be surprising if the Packers look at drafting a different position with the 15th overall pick.
