Green Bay Packers Rival Has Not Yet 100% Ruled Out Adding Aaron Rodgers in 2025

Only five players have won back back-to-back NFL MVP awards. Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was the last to do it in 2020-2021.

For the first time in his 20-year NFL career, former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is a free agent. Unfortunately for him, he does not have as large of a market as he did just a few years ago. Following his worst statistical season, a year that saw him complete 63.0% of his passes for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and a 90.5 passer rating, NFL teams are not exactly clamoring at his door to talk.

Up until two weeks ago, just three teams seemed to have genuine interest in signing Rodgers for the 2025 NFL season. That is, of course, if he chose to play at all. Until he officially signs somewhere, retirement is very much on the table for him. Those teams, as has been reported multiple times, were the Minnesota Vikings, New York Giants, and Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Pittsburgh Steelers Appear to Be the Only Team Left Interested in Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Aaron Rodgers

Over the course of the last couple of weeks, Rodgers has seen the pool of teams interested him narrow down to just a single possibility. Minnesota, the team with whom he most wanted to play, informed him that they had no plans of pursuing him right now. Instead, they plan on entering the 2025 NFL season with the inexperienced JJ McCarthy as their starting quarterback after allowing Pro Bowl selection Sam Darnold leave in free agency.

The Giants, meanwhile, have signed two different potential starting quarterbacks. First, they signed former number one overall pick Jameis Winston. Then, earlier this week, they agreed to terms with Super Bowl champion and 10-time Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson.

That, of course, leaves Pittsburgh as the only realistic landing spot for Rodgers. Last weekend, he reportedly spent six hours meeting with Steelers coaches and front office personnel at the team facility. But he did not sign a contract.

The Minnesota Vikings Will Not 100% Rule Out Adding Aaron Rodgers

Per a report by Cody Benjamin and Bryan DeArdo of CBS Sports, Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, while comfortable with McCarthy as his starting quarterback, will not 100% rule out adding Rodgers somewhere down the line (if he is still available).

“A player like him, he’s always gonna be in those conversations,” Adofo-Mensah said of Rodgers. “[But] we’re happy with where we are right now. Right now, given all our scenario-planning, we’re happy with our room. We got to a place where everyone was transparent. I know Kevin and him have a great relationship still.

“We didn’t think it was the right move at this time,” Adofo-Mensah continued. “It is also his decision whether he signs with another team. [But] for me to sit here and say anything’s 100% forever, that’s just not the job. So obviously things can change.”

If McCarthy shows signs of struggles during OTA’s, after the NFL Draft, and if Rodgers is still available, Minnesota could still make a run at their former rival.

Of course, Rodgers may be a Steeler by then. Or he could be retired.
