While the Green Bay Packers have continued to conduct interviews with potential draftees as the 2023 NFL draft continues to inch closer.
The Packers are stuck in a rather odd draft situation that has not been seen recently. Between the fate of Aaron Rodgers hanging in the balance and varying trade packages being announced, there is plenty of uncertainty. Where the Packers will select, and who they will select still seems like a complete mystery. However, one aspect of the Packers 2023 draft feels certain, and it involves a tight end landing in Green Bay.
Will The Green Bay Packers Select a Tight End In The Upcoming Draft?
The future plans for the Packers entail quarterback Jordan Love taking over the helm of the team. Love has yet to officially earn this role, as no Aaron Rodgers trade has been completed just yet. Green Bay will need to add more offensive talent to the team to support the young quarterback. One position the Packers will need to develop is the tight end room, following the departure of Robert Tonyan to the Bears.
The 2023 NFL draft could be an excellent spot for the Packers to land the tight end of their choice. Both Michael Mayer of Notre Dame and Dalton Kincaid of Utah have been the talk of the draft at the position. While they continue to share the spotlight, there are three other players the Green Bay Packers could consider drafting this year.
Draft Profile: Ben Sims, Baylor Bears

Ben Sims is a senior tight end out of Baylor who can do a little bit of everything. Coming in at 6-foot-5-inches, 260 pounds, Sims has a surprising burst of speed running a 4.59 40-yard dash. Sims has the ability to get open deep to catch long passes. The tight end can also take the dump passes deep down field with his speed and carrier vision.
In his four-year career with the Bears, Sims recorded back-to-back 31 reception seasons along with 785 yards and 12 touchdowns. Sims also has two rushing yards on two carries for two touchdowns. The tight end recorded seven total touchdowns in 2021 during his most successful collegiate campaign. While Sims has the speed and catching radius for the next level, his ability to create separation is going to be what holds him back the most.
Draft Profile: Josh Whyle, Cincinnati Bearcats

Josh Whyle of Cincinnati, Ohio is a tremendous tight end from the Cincinnati Bearcats. Whyle measured in at 6-foot-6-inches, 248 pounds and also ran a 4.69 40-yard dash during the NFL combine. In four years of play, Whyle recorded 88 receptions and 1062 yards along with 15 touchdowns. The first season of action for Whyle was pretty quiet, but 2020 served as a breakout for the tight end with 353 yards and six touchdowns.
For someone the size of Whyle, he is able to move his body incredibly well to adjust for receptions. Whyle also has a burst of speed that allows him to create separation against defenders. The tight end understands how to use his body in the blocking game as well as he is unafraid to charge ahead. What Whyle will need to work on at the next level is his ability to make contested catches and run clean routes.
Draft Profile: Tucker Kraft, South Dakota State Jackrabbits

Tucker Kraft from South Dakota State University is a 6-foot-5-inch, 254 pound tight end. Kraft also ran a 4.69 40-yard dash during his combine, but received an athleticism score of 83 compared to the 70 that Josh Whyle scored. The talented tight end has a big, thick frame with a great surprising athletic ability. Kraft is able to put extra yards on the board whenever he touches the football.
Kraft exploded onto the scene during the 2021 season when he recorded 65 receptions, 773 yards, and six touchdowns for the Jackrabbits. Kraft was originally a running back in high school, recording 1405 yards and 24 touchdowns as a senior. The athletic ability of Kraft is by far his best attribute, but he can also react and adjust quickly in the blocking game as well. At the next level, Kraft will need to improve his route running to create more separation.
Regardless of which tight end the Green Bay Packers take, the team will certainly still end up with a talented athlete.
