The Green Bay Packers have signed a few value players
The Green Bay Packers have been digging into the thrift store in free agency for the past two weeks, and the team’s total spending might surprise fans. The Packers are low on cap for next season, as they are expected to have an effective total cap of less than 1$ million to play with this offseason. With limited space, the Packers have watched many veteran players sign with new teams. However, a few players have re-signed, and a long snapper was signed coming from another team.

The total bill so far for the Packers’ free agency spending has been cheap. According to Ken Ingalls, who studies and covers the Packers’ finances, the team has spent $7.53 million against the salary cap for their seven signings. Offensive lineman Yosh Nijman ($3.55) million and returner Keisean Nixon ($2.02 million) have been the biggest ticket items this offseason. The other five signed/tendered players have come in well under $1 million a piece.
So far the Packers signed/tendered 7 free agents counting for only $7.53M on the salary cap:
RFA – Yosh Nijman: $3.55M
UFA – Keisean Nixon: $2.02M
UFA – Rudy Ford: $750K
UFA – Matt Orzech: $430K
UFA – Tyler Davis: $290K
UFA – Corey Ballentine: $250K
UFA – Tarvarius Moore: $240K— Ken Ingalls – Packers Cap 💰 (@KenIngalls) March 24, 2023
$7.53 million in spending by March 24th is a pretty astounding stat. And even more so when you factor in that money is going to seven different players. Many teams were spending double that on one player last week.
The Packers need to build through the draft

The Packers still need to add more players to the roster, especially at pass-catching and defensive line/pass-rushing positions. The Packers need to bring in another wide receiver via the draft, but quarterback Jordan Love could use a veteran presence to mix with the skilled personnel’s youth movement.
But there’s a reason the front office isn’t bringing in high-dollar free agents, and it’s because the Packers lack many and good options to increase their cap. Expect general manager Brian Gutekunst to continue searching the bargain bin in free agency and loading up talent in April’s draft.
