It’s still early days in the 2024 NFL season, but there are already compelling narratives that would have Green Bay Packers fans talking about their team for days.
The biggest talking point for fans is Jordan Love’s knee. While it’s never good to rush your QB1’s return to the squad when he’s dealing with such an injury, the team’s Week 2 victory made it clear that the Packers are one-dimensional offensively without Utah State product’s arm and vision.
Another interesting narrative is Malik Willis’ performance in Week 2. It’s clear that he’s far from the QB Matt LaFleur would have on the field when they’re in the postseason, but his solid Week 2 performance proves that he’s a capable NFL quarterback worthy of attention.
While these two points are enough to get Packers fans talking for hours, one underestimated narrative is how the front office’s free-agency signings were key to the team’s win against the Colts.
Analyst praises the Green Bay Packers’ free-agency signings for key roles vs. Colts
247Sports’ Jimmy Christensen wrote about the Packers’ big signings during free agency and how they impacted the team.
He first showered Xavier McKinney with praise, pointing out that every safety they had the season prior isn’t on the roster. He added that McKinney’s two interceptions and eight tackles through two games immediately make him worth the four-year, $67-million contact.
He also showered praises on Josh Jacobs, who was a major part of the team’s 16-10 win over the Indianapolis Colts:
The Packers’ strategy against the Colts was obvious, they were going to live or die by the run. In the past, LaFleur would try to split carries between Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon or Jamaal Williams when he was on the roster. However, this past game we saw LaFleur give Josh Jacobs 32 carries. During Jones’ time with the Packers, he did not have a single game with 30 or more carries. It is clear the Packers trust Jacobs’ durability and truly believe he can be their workhorse.
While the season is long, the two players are showing that the Packers’ gambles on them are working out. Whether the two can become anchors the team can build on for a Super Bowl-winning run remains to be seen, but they make the squad a more rounded out squad.
