3 Reasons the Green Bay Packers Should Target Darius Slay in Free Agency

Free agency is in full swing and the Green Bay Packers have been fairly quiet. Obviously, the Packers have been preoccupied with the situation surrounding Aaron Rodgers. However, while they await his decision they can still dip their hand into free agency.

The Philadelphia Eagles are releasing five-time Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay. Here are three reasons the Green Bay Packers should target the former Detroit Lions star.

    1. Packers Need Another Piece in the Secondary

The Packers’ secondary did not live up to expectations in 2022 after being hyped up all off-season. They lost 2021 first-round pick Eric Stokes to injury and relied heavily on Jaire Alexander and Rasul Douglas. Outside of those two players, the Packers’ secondary was very inconsistent. Adding Slay would give them some flexibility to move Jaire Alexander around the field since they would have another number-one corner on the field. Stokes will be back, but, even before his injury, it looked like he had taken a step back.

    2. Allows the Packers to Draft Other Positions of Need

The Packers could set themselves up for immediate impact in the draft with a signing like this. Adding Slay would allow them to focus on positions like safety or EDGE early in the draft. Slay fills a need before the Green Bay Packers even get on the clock in April. Adding Slay could allow the Packers to let Jaire Alexander follow number-one receivers even in the slot since they would now have two great outside corners. They would have four starting-caliber corners on the roster with Alexander, Douglas, Slay and Stokes.

    3. Creates an Elite Cornerback Duo

The Green Bay Packers really like Raul Douglas and he is clearly a fan favorite. While he is a great player, he is not on the level of Darius Slay. In 2022 Slay was named to his fifth Pro Bowl. He was also listed on the inaugural NFLPA Player’s All-Pro Team. Slay and Alexander would instantly be a top-three duo in the NFL. They may need this in order to compete for a championship. The Dolphins just paired Jalen Ramsey with Xavien Howard and the Cowboys paired Stephon Gilmore with Trevon Diggs. This move would help the Packers keep pace with teams ready to make a Super Bowl run.
