Some players on the Green Bay Packers roster have been surprising in either a good way or a bad way throughout OTAs and mandatory minicamps. Next month will be the start of training camp and many more questions about the 53-man roster will be answered.
There won’t be any questions about who the starting quarterback will be this year or who will be Jordan Love’s top targets. There will be other questions to solve like how will the 4-3 defense look after switching from a 3-4 defense.
The Green Bay Packers hope to stay healthier this season than they were last season. Green Bay finished with a 9-8 record a season ago and they have more room to grow in the 2024 season.
Green Bay Packers Quarterback Sean Clifford’s Stock Has Plummeted After OTAs and Mandatory Minicamp
It is not a surprise that Sean Clifford’s name is on this list. He is currently in a battle for the backup quarterback job with rookie Michael Pratt. Clifford was the backup quarterback last season to Jordan Love. A season ago, Clifford was a rookie from Penn State.
Sayre Bedinger of lombardiavenue.com thinks that Sean Clifford is one of three players on the Green Bay Packers roster whose stock has plummeted throughout the offseason. Bedinger said:
“To say it hasn’t been the best offseason so far for backup quarterback Sean Clifford might be an understatement. The former fifth-round pick out of Penn State has been throwing the ball to the wrong players throughout OTAs and getting outplayed in practices by a rookie who is just now starting to learn the offense.
That rookie is Michael Pratt, the seventh-round pick out of Tulane who should have never been on the board that late in the NFL Draft. The fact that Pratt has practiced well and Clifford hasn’t has really given Matt LaFleur and Brian Gutekunst something to think about. Clifford throwing a bunch of interceptions at OTAs isn’t going to cost him his roster spot, necessarily, but it certainly has sounded the alarms and given Pratt an opportunity to steal his job.
If the Packers were okay rolling with Clifford last year, it stands to reason that they would be perfectly fine rolling with Pratt this year. There’s inherent risk involved in both if Jordan Love goes down with an injury and either of those guys needs to play at all.”
It will be interesting to see who gets more reps with the backups during training camp. It appears as if Michael Pratt will have the edge over Sean Clifford, even though Clifford is currently listed as the backup quarterback on the Green Bay Packers depth chart.
A lot can change between training camp and Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season. The Green Bay Packers will most likely keep only two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster and not three quarterbacks.
