Green Bay Packers quarterback Sean Clifford was a rookie last season. He was a fifth-round selection out of Penn State. Clifford was in no danger of missing the roster last season, but it is a whole different ball game this season. Sean Clifford was struggling during offseason workouts and his struggles have been continuing in training camp.
Clifford is throwing several interceptions during camp and that is not a very good sign. He is currently competing with rookie Michael Pratt for the backup quarterback job this year. Pratt was a seventh-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Tulane.
It will be interesting to see if Clifford can turn it around in a hurry or if he will continue to be horrendous in camp. At the moment, the Packers may not have a reliable option behind quarterback Jordan Love. Thank goodness Love signed his contract extension over the weekend. It would be a disaster if something happened to Love this season.
Dairylandexpress.com Writer Sayre Bedinger Thinks That Green Bay Packers Quarterback Sean Clifford Is Already On Thin Ice
Entering another week of training camp, there are a lot of Packers players who have not performed well in camp. Sayre Bedinger of dairylandexpress.com thinks that Clifford is one of six players on the roster who is already on thin ice entering the second week of NFL training camp. Bedinger said:
“With Jordan Love not practicing early on in training camp, Sean Clifford got a lot of opportunities to show what he can do out there leading the offense.
Clifford struggled to throw it to the players he was supposed to be throwing the ball to, and dating back to OTAs, he has thrown far too many interceptions for the Packers to feel any level of comfort with him as their top backup quarterback. The issue is that Michael Pratt, a rookie 7th-round pick, probably can’t be relied upon in that way either.
The Packers really need to figure out their backup situation behind Jordan Love. This is an issue that could rear its ugly head at the worst possible time. If Love goes down with an injury when the Packers are in the midst of a playoff run, it would be roster malpractice to throw Sean Clifford into a game with playoff stakes.”
This could be a way for the Green Bay Packers to sign Ryan Tannehill or a different quarterback to the roster, who is currently a free agent. Green Bay could have a very bad backup quarterback situation.
This situation is very similar to the one when Peyton Manning was the starting quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts and when Curtis Painter was the backup quarterback. Indianapolis fans remember how bad that was because Painter was not reliable.
