The Green Bay Packers could make some cuts to the roster before the start of training camp in a few weeks. Green Bay will have some position battles during training camp, just like all of the other teams in the NFL. There could be some surprise cuts before the start of the 2024 season or it could occur before then.
A season ago, there were a lot of questions about the quarterback position. Many wanted to know what Jordan Love could potentially be for the Green Bay Packers and many also wondered how the backup quarterback would be. At one point last season when the Packers were 2-5, some fans wanted Jordan Love benched for Sean Clifford.
It never happened and the rest is history. Love is now ready to take the next step in his game and maybe lead them to the promised land this season.
Green Bay Packers Quarterback Sean Clifford a Cut Candidate Prior To 2024 Training Camp
It would be a massive shock if the Packers decided to cut quarterback Sean Clifford before the start of training camp. Yes, Clifford has not looked good during offseason workouts and rookie quarterback Michael Pratt from Tulane has looked better.
However, it would just be silly for the Green Bay Packers to make this move. Sean Clifford is currently listed as the backup quarterback for Jordan Love on the depth chart.
Sayre Bedinger of dairylandexpress.com thinks that Sean Clifford is one of six potential cut candidates for the Green Bay Packers prior to training camp. Bedinger said:
“You’re not typically going to see teams carry just two quarterbacks during the offseason when 90-man rosters are allowed, but it wouldn’t be shocking if the Packers were so disappointed by the offseason performance of 2023 fifth-round pick Sean Clifford that they decided to move on.
Clifford was throwing interceptions left and right throughout OTAs and minicamp and was getting out-performed by seventh-round rookie Michael Pratt. Is it possible that we could see the Packers opt for a different third quarterback completely to back up Jordan Love?
One possibility that could make some sense is veteran Ryan Tannehill, who didn’t cross paths with Matt LaFleur in Tennessee but could come in and raise the floor at the position in case Jordan Love has to miss any time. Because if Clifford’s rough performance at OTAs and minicamp showed us or taught us anything, it’s that the Packers need to be better prepared in the event that Jordan Love has to miss any extensive time.
Take last year for example. What if Love had to miss a stretch of two or three games while the Packers were clearly contending for a Wild Card spot? It would have been catastrophic to have to turn to Sean Clifford in November or December to start multiple games. The Packers got away with it last year, but 67 quarterbacks started games in the league last year. The odds are, they’re going to need the backup to play at least a little bit.
And that can’t be Sean Clifford. The Packers need to make some type of move to upgrade their QB2 situation and possibly cut their losses with the former Penn State starter.”
Would it be possible for the Green Bay Packers to cut Sean Clifford and sign free-agent quarterback Ryan Tannehill? That could be an option for Green Bay, but wouldn’t that be taking reps away potentially from Michael Pratt? If the plan is to only keep two quarterbacks on the roster anyway, they are better off just having Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt compete.
They should only bring in Ryan Tannehill if Jordan Love were to get hurt and let’s hope that doesn’t happen. Sean Clifford being cut before training camp would be a head-scratching decision.
