“Some Team Is Going To Pay”: Green Bay Packers Should Avoid Signing San Francisco 49ers Defensive Back In Free Agency

The Green Bay Packers could very well have a new cornerback room next season. Jaire Alexander, Eric Stokes, and Keisean Nixon were the top three cornerbacks on the roster this past season.

There is a great chance that all three of those players will not be on the team next season. It is one of the reasons why the Packers need to draft, sign, or trade for cornerbacks this offseason. One name who will be hitting the free agent market this offseason is San Francisco 49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward.

The 49ers finished with a 6-11 record a season ago and they will look to make changes to the roster this offseason. San Francisco will have the 11th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and there is a great chance that will draft a cornerback with that selection.

This means that the franchise is going to let Charvarius Ward walk this offseason. Fansided.com writer Rucker Haringey wrote about five potential free agents that the Green Bay Packers should avoid signing this offseason. One of the players he mentioned was Charvarius Ward from the San Francisco 49ers. Haringey said:

“Teams looking for cornerback help are going to be very interested in Charvarius Ward. He’s been one of the steadiest defensive backs in the NFL if you look at his performance over the last several seasons in San Francisco.

Unfortunately for Ward, he’s hitting the open market at the wrong time. He was nothing more than a mediocre starter in 2024 for the 49ers. Betting on him to bounce back during his age-29 season is not a savvy plan for a team with title aspirations.

Some team is going to pay Ward like an above-average starter but the Packers should be looking for safer options. his struggles in 2024 should cause them to spend their money elsewhere at corner.”

Ward this past season with the 49ers recorded 54 tackles and seven pass deflections. Charvarius Ward did not record a single interception this past season. There will be some teams that could overspend on him and it would be a mistake for the Green Bay Packers to do so.

D.J. Reed Should Be a Better Option

If the Green Bay Packers are going to sign a cornerback, they should sign cornerback D.J. Reed. He played for the New York Jets last season and will be one of the best cornerbacks on the free-agent market. Reed would be worth the money and not Charvarius Ward.

It remains to be seen what the Green Bay Packers will do at the cornerback position this offseason. Whatever it is, there will no doubt be a lot of transactions.
