The Green Bay Packers will enter the offseason looking to address certain areas in their roster, such as their overall defense, and one PFF analyst recently made an interesting free agent pitch.
Bradley Locker of PFF suggested that the Green Bay Packers should consider signing Khalil Mack this summer. The 33-year-old linebacker will hit unrestricted free agency after finishing his one-year, $19.2 million deal with the Los Angeles Chargers.
“Even at 33, Mack is likely the best free-agent edge defender this offseason,” Locker wrote in his column. “The Chargers star hasn’t slowed down at all, securing 90.4-plus PFF overall grades in both 2023 and 2024.”
“Mack’s 137 pressures over the past two years are the 12th most among edge rushers, and his 91.6 PFF run-defense grade ranks first. Mack would be a home-run signing to pair with Rashan Gary,” he concluded.
Should the Green Bay Packers go for Khalil Mack?
Khalil Mack just completed his 11th NFL season and has earned Pro Bowl honors for the ninth time in his career after racking up six sacks, six quarterback hits, two forced fumbles, and nine passes defended in 16 games.
As mentioned, Mack could form an intriguing partnership with Rashan Gary, but the Green Bay Packers typically don’t spend significant dollars on older players. According to Spotrac, the 2016 NFL Defensive Player of the Year is projected to get a one-year contract worth around $6.8 million.
The soon-to-be 34-year-old also mentioned the possibility of retiring from the game during the Los Angeles Chargers’ Wild Card Round loss to the Houston Texans.
