In a recent mailbag column, Matt Schneidman of The Athletics fielded some questions about the Green Bay Packers from his readers, and among those raised was about the 2024 NFL season outlook of wide receive Romeo Doubs, who is entering his third year in the league – particularly about whether the wideout will get the most attention from quarterback Jordan Love in the red zone.
Which Packers receiver will be targeted the most in the red zone? And why is it Dontayvion Wicks? — @jaydimas23
I bet it will be Romeo Doubs. Not only does he have perhaps the frame most apt for winning 50-50 balls, but he probably has the best hands on the team. Doubs tied for second in the NFL in red zone touchdown catches last year, behind only the Denver Broncos’ Courtland Sutton. Jayden Reed got plenty of red zone work, too, and he and Doubs each got 17 red zone targets. But in a got-to-have-it situation inside the 20-yard line, I’m trusting Doubs.
In the 2023 NFL season, Doubs was second to Jayden Reed in terms of receiving yards (674) but led the team in targets (96). Reed and Doubs each had eight receiving touchdowns as well. With Christian Watson also in the picture downfield for Green Bay, Doubs will have competition for touches in the passing attack. But given the success he had in the red zone in 2023 and, as mentioned by Schneidman, size, Doubs is a fair bet to lead the Packers in red zone targets.
