Report: Green Bay Packers Working To Retain Premier Free Agent

The Green Bay Packers have a number of pending free agents this off-season.  In fact, they have 14 unrestricted free agents going into 2023.  It is widely believed that the Packers will be interested in retaining a few of those players.  A few will be on the bubble, and a few will make sense to part ways with.  One pending free agent seemed all but certain to be headed to a new team, however, a recent report suggests the Packers may work to keep him on the roster.  Wide Receiver Allen Lazard has been a “do-it-all” wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers for years, and his time in Green Bay may not be up.

Following the Green Bay Packers regular season finale loss against the Detroit Lions, Allen Lazard made it pretty clear he may have played his last game as a Packer.  After being asked about the future of Aaron Rodgers and where he might play next season, this was his response:

“I don’t know where I’m going to be at. I can’t worry about someone else,” Lazard said, standing at his locker. “Going into the game, I kind of had a realization that my first game here, and potentially my last game, which it is, was going to be against the Lions at home.”

According to Matt Lombardo, a Senior NFL Analyst:

According to league sources, the Packers are making an effort to re-sign veteran wide receiver Allen Lazard before the new league year begins.  27 year old Lazard is coming off a stellar 2022 season that saw him catch a career high 60 passing for 788 yards and six touchdowns.  However, Rodgers situation, whether the Packers are able to trade the veteran quarterback, could determine Lazard’s future.

That’s because Green Bay is approximately $8.5 million over the cap as the off-season begins.  Retaining Lazard makes sense for Green Bay, whether it is Rodgers or Jordan Love playing quarterback.  Lazard is a sure-handed veteran who only dropped four passes in 98 targets last season.

Allen Lazard will likely be looking to receive a big payday in free agency, but if the Packers are able to find a way to bring him back he is a reliable wide receiver who Aaron Rodgers (or Jordan Love) trusts.  Not to mention he is one of the best run-blocking wide receivers in the entire NFL.  Two different salary projections have him making more than $11 million per season on his next contract.

PFF’s Brad Spielberger projects Lazard to get a three-year deal worth $33 million (with $21.5 million guaranteed) in free agency. Spotrac, on the other hand, lists Lazard’s market value as over $12 million per season. The website’s market value calculator projects him to sign a three-year contract worth $37,528,000 ($12.5 million annually).
