The Green Bay Packers are finalizing the 53-man roster for the 2024 season. During training camp, one of the biggest battles was the backup quarterback spot between Michael Pratt and Sean Clifford.
Neither quarterback performed well during the preseason, but Pratt was miles better than Clifford was. Michael Pratt was a seventh-round pick (245th overall) in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Tulane. As for Sean Clifford, he was a rookie from Penn State a season ago and Jordan Love’s backup.
Green Bay Packers Release Both Michael Pratt and Sean Clifford
Sources confirmed to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky that the Green Bay Packers are releasing both Michael Pratt and Sean Clifford. It will be interesting to see whether or not they return to the Packers on the practice squad. There could be some other NFL teams that could be interested in both Clifford and Pratt.
It was a surprise to see Michael Pratt released, but it wasn’t a surprise to see Sean Clifford released. Clifford was struggling all offseason long. He was throwing interceptions during practice and his performance caught up to him.
Packers Traded For Malik Willis On Monday
On Monday, the Packers made a shocking move when they acquired quarterback Malik Willis from the Tennessee Titans for a 2025 seventh-round selection. Many were wondering if Willis was going to be the backup quarterback for Green Bay after this trade.
Well, with Pratt and Clifford being released, Malik Willis be the backup quarterback. Many speculated he was only acquired to run the scout team because Green Bay will face Jalen Hurts and Anthony Richardson for the first two weeks of the 2024 season. There was no room for Willis on the Tennessee Titans roster.
Will Levis is the starting quarterback for the Tennessee Titans and Mason Rudolph is the backup. No matter how this is looked at, Jordan Love can not get hurt for the Green Bay Packers. Malik Willis is somewhat of an upgrade at backup quarterback over Sean Clifford or Michael Pratt. It was no surprise that head coach Matt LaFleur only wanted to keep two quarterbacks on the roster once again this season.
