Green Bay Packers Plan to Release 2x Pro Bowl CB Jaire Alexander After 7 Seasons

For months, one of the biggest questions surrounding the Green Bay Packers was the immediate future of two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander. After missing 10 games for the second straight season in 2024, Alexander was set to enter 2025 with a salary of $17.5 million. The Packers, though, did not want to pay him that full amount given his injury history over the past four seasons. Alexander, on the other hand, did not want to take less money.

And so, after weeks of contract restructure discussions that obviously went nowhere, the Packers have decided to part ways with their star defender:

Alexander, the first player general manager Brian Gutekunst ever drafted, ends his seven year stint with Green Bay with 12 career interceptions.

The Green Bay Packers Tried to Trade Jaire Alexander Earlier This Offseason

Per Packers insider Mike Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Packers had a team interested in trading for Alexander earlier this offseason. However, just as now, the two-time Pro Bowl cornerback refused to restructure his contract for that unnamed team. As a result, that team backed out of negotiations as they, too, did not want to pay him the full $17.5 million.

The #Packers had a trade in place with another team earlier in the year, but the other team wouldn’t pay Alexander’s full $17M salary. Alexander didn’t want to take less and do the trade never happened. The die was cast early in the off-season.

Green Bay, and that unnamed NFL team, wanted to restructure Alexander’s contract, which had two years remaining on it, because of his injury history over the past four seasons. Since signing his contract, Alexander has played in just 34 of a possible 68 games. Over the past two seasons, he has played in 14 of a possible 34.

Of course, many believed that this result, his release, was inevitable after he told reporters at the end of 2024 that he had “nothing good to say” and that he did not know if he was going to return to the team in 2025.

This has truly been a long [and very weird] saga, but what is most disappointing is the fact that Green Bay was unable to get anything in return for the two-time Second Team All-Pro. Once his release becomes official, he will be free to sign with any team.

Hopefully he stays out of the NFC North.
