The Green Bay Packers lost three key offensive lineman this offseason. Yosh Nijman, a swing tackle who filled in at left tackle in 2021, signed a contract with the Carolina Panthers. Jon Runyan Jr., who had been the team’s starting right guard for the last three seasons, signed with the New York Giants.
And, of course, David Bakhtiari was released following another injury-plagued season. He remains a free agent after being able to play just 13 games in the last three seasons.
In order to replenish their depth on the offensive line, the Packers drafted three offensive linemen in the 2024 NFL Draft: Jordan Morgan (first round), Jacob Monk (fifth round), and Travis Glover (seventh round). All three have played tackle, but general manager Brian Gutekunst and offensive line coach Luke Butkus want to train them to play multiple positions.
The Green Bay Packers Signed Two Offensive Linemen as Undrafted Free Agents
In addition to drafting Morgan, Monk, and Glover in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Packers also signed two offensive linemen as undrafted free agents.
Donovan Jennings was signed from the University of South Florida. Like the three offensive linemen taken in the draft, he has an extensive background playing left tackle. He reportedly received a $10,000 signing bonus and $100,000 contract.
The other offensive lineman taken was Trente Jones from the National Champion Michigan Wolverines. He was not a regular starter for the team, but served as their swing tackle.
Green Bay Packers Offensive Tackle Trente Jones Suddenly Retired from Football
Yesterday, fans were shocked to learn that the Packers had placed Jones on their reserve/retired list. The young offensive lineman had decided to retire from football after the team’s rookie mini camp.
According to several posts online, Jones has stated that the reason for his sudden and surprising retirement is a back injury that may require surgery.
By placing him on their reserved/retired list, the Packers maintain his NFL rights. This means that should he ever change his mind and want to comeback to the NFL, he will be a Packer.
In the meantime, Jones plans on pursuing a career as a social media influencer. His TikTok account reportedly has over 350,000 followers.
Jones’ sudden retirement opens the door for Jennings, who now has an easier chance of making Green Bay’s final 53-man roster.
