The Green Bay Packers went into the 2024 NFL Draft with two main missions. Address the defense and the offensive line. 8 of their 11 draft picks were spent in those two categories. However, one veteran on the team is refusing to hand his job to a top drafted rookie.
Green Bay Packers Veteran Doing Everything It Takes To Keep His Starting Job
Jordan Morgan, the first-round pick of the Green Bay Packers, represents a challenge for left tackle Rasheed Walker.
Walker “didn’t say anything” after the Packers selected Morgan at No. 25 overall in April, according to coach Matt LaFleur:
“He’s come in with the right mindset,” LaFleur said Wednesday. “He’s been a guy that’s been totally locked in and totally dialed in (during the offseason workout program).”
The Packers Will Have Major Competition At Left Tackle This Season
Walker, who was drafted in the seventh round of 2022, started 15 regular season games and two playoff games in 2023. His first season as a starter was filled with ups and downs, but he eventually settled in and performed well toward the end.
A total of 20 pressures were allowed and seven penalties were committed by Walker during his first nine games. There was a time during the middle of the season when the Packers rotated left tackles. While reestablishing himself as the full-time starter, Walker allowed 16 pressures and committed only three penalties in the last 10 games. Over the last half of the season, Walker’s overall grade and pass-blocking grade both improved dramatically per Pro Football Focus.
In search of more competition, the Packers selected Morgan in the first round. Morgan is a left tackle from Arizona who will get a chance to actually start for the team as a rookie.
