The Green Bay Packers got a double blackeye last Friday in Brazil. Aside from absorbing a 34-29 loss at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1 of the 2024 NFL regular season, the Packers also saw starting quarterback Jordan Love go down with a knee injury.
Love is expected to be out for the next few weeks at least, which means Malik Willis is the next man up at the quarterback position.
Willis was acquired by the Packers from the Tennessee Titans before the start of the 2024 campaign. But he’s someone who doesn’t inspire much confidence as a potential QB1 for Green Bay.
Should the Green Bay Packers look elsewhere for a temporary QB?
In a recent column, Pete Dougherty of Packersnews.com floated the name of free-agent quarterback Ryan Tannehill as a name Green Bay should be kicking the tires on.
But if Love’s injury turns out to be more for the medium or long term, like a month or two, it’s hard not to think Gutekunst will be on the phone with Ryan Tannehill’s agent Saturday. The 36-year-old Tannehill figures to be the best option out there if the Packers have to play a stretch of games without Love, and he’d only cost a contract, not a draft pick in a trade, because he’s unsigned and waiting for just such an opportunity.
Given the current (and only) QB option at the moment for the Packers – which is Willis – most quarterbacks out there in the free-agent market are better than the dual-threat youngster.
Tannehill, who turned 36 years old, is experienced and had just played as recently as the 2023 season – his last with the Titans. In five years with the Titans, Tannehill, a former Pro Bowler, had 14,447 passing yards and 93 touchdowns against 40 interceptions on 66.6 percent completions.
He had a career revival with the Titans after years of playing with the Miami Dolphins, and a team like the Packers, who are brimming with quality receivers downfield, could provide Tannehill’s NFL career another wind.
