The Green Bay Packers have seen their former legendary quarterback go through the ringer over the last few years. Brett Favre has been enthralled in a Welfare Scandal in the state of Mississippi for some time now.
That scandal just took an interesting turn.
Green Bay Packers: Possible Jail Time Announced In Brett Favre Welfare Scandal
According to NBCNews.com via ProFootballTalk, reporter Anna Wolfe and editor Adam Ganucheau have been ordered by a court to produce documents naming confidential sources who helped to expose the scam in the Pulitzer Prize-winning report. The order comes on the heels of a lawsuit filed by former Mississippi governor Phil Bryant, who is suing the outlet for defamation.
Per the report, Wolfe and Ganucheau could face contempt of court and incarceration if they fail to comply. They intend to fight the decision and bring it to the state Supreme Court if needed.
“If one of us goes to jail, we will be the first person to go to jail in the Mississippi welfare scandal,” Wolfe said in an interview with NBC News. “How can I make promises to sources that I’m going to keep them confidential if this is possible?”
Wolfe’s work revealed that $77 million in federal funds given to the state of Mississippi under Bryant’s administration were directed elsewhere – including into businesses and organizations associated with Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre.
Neither Bryant nor Favre have been charged with any crimes so the irony is not lost on people who noticed that the journalist who exposed the scheme is now facing more jail time than the people at the center of it all.
It is no secret that Brett Favre is one of the most talented quarterbacks in the history of the NFL. In his playing days, Favre was a three-time NFL MVP and ranks fourth all-time in passing yards (71,838) and touchdown passes (508). The countless heroic moments he had on the gridiron will forever be remembered by Packers and NFL fans.
That being said, Favre hasn’t made the best headlines since leaving Green Bay in 2008. When he played for the New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings, he was sued twice for sexual harassment, and in retirement, he has ben involved in the aforementtioned welfare scandal in his home state.
It will be interesting to see what his comments are on this entire scandal once it is all said and done.
