While it is only the preseason, the Green Bay Packers have a game this week! They will travel to Cleveland to take on the Browns Saturday at 3:25 CST. There are over 90 players on the current roster and a good amount of them will not play or play little. Players like Jordan Love, Kenny Clark, and Jaire Alexander will likely sit. Some starters could play a few series. For the most part, this first game is for the players battling to make the 53 man roster. There are a number of battles in training camp right now for the Green Bay Packers. Saturday is a day to gain momentum for some players. Here are five players to keep an eye on Saturday.
Green Bay Packers Players to Watch: Anders Carlson
The kick competition is the biggest training camp battle for the Green Bay Packers. Incumbent Anders Carlson was up and down in 2023. He has a huge leg, but inconsistency in the postseason and late in the regular season is why the Packers have brought in Greg Joseph.
Andy Herman of the Pack-A-Day podcast has been keeping track of the kicking numbers between Carlson and Joseph. According to Herman, Joseph has made three more kicks than Carlson. If this is a close battle at the end, it will be Carlson that likely wins the job. At the same time, he does not have much wiggle room left. Saturday will be the start of a huge stretch for the second year kicker.
Sean Clifford
While Jordan Love sat out of practice waiting for his contract extension, it was a great opportunity for Sean Clifford to take a step in the right direction as QB1. Overall, it’s been a tough training camp, especially early, for the second year back-up quarterback from Penn State.
It’s hard to tell if this is indeed a true battle with Michael Pratt for the second sting job, but Clifford should see a ton of action on Saturday. If he has a good game, he will likely take the back-up job. If not and Pratt is impressive, the Green Bay Packers coaching staff could have a tough decision to make.
Eric Stokes
I am not sure how many reps Stokes will see Saturday, especially with the injury to Carrington Valentine. I do think he needs some reps after only playing in three games a season ago and recording five total tackles.
With a starting job likely the end result, it would be nice to see Stokes get a few defensive possessions, He could use it to gain some confidence and good game reps too with the regular season a month away. The Green Bay Packers need him to produce this season.
Emmanuel Wilson
I doubt we see Josh Jacobs and MarShawn Lloyd this weekend. AJ Dillon’s roster spot seems like a lock too. However, Wilson is probably the odd man out at this point and should get a ton of snaps.
Whether he is playing for a practice squad position or a roster spot on another team, this is an important game for Wilson to show out. He did great last season in the preseason and was awarded a roster position because of it. He knows how important this is.
Kadeem Telfort
Both back-up tackle positions are wide open for the Green Bay Packers. It seems like Jordan Morgan, who was a an early back-up tackle candidate, is moving to right guard and will likely win that spot.
There are other players like Andre Dillard, Luke Tenuta, and Caleb Jones, but Telfort did have a good start to training camp and was even seeing some first team reps at right tackle with Zach Tom still out. After spending all of 2023 on the Green Bay Packers practice squad, Telfort is right in the thick of getting a 53 man roster spot. Look for him to get a ton of reps on Saturday too.
