The Green Bay Packers are 11-4 and on their way to the NFL Playoffs for the second season in a row. Of course, this quite the accomplishment considering the fact that many NFL “experts” and some of their own fans believed that the team was headed towards a long rebuild when Jordan Love took over for Aaron Rodgers following the 2022 NFL season.
Fortunately, the doubters were wrong. Love has been as good of a quarterback as Green Bay could have hoped for, especially when the weather gets cold (and Toyotathon begins).
Indeed, Love has squashed the narrative that he would not be a good enough quarterback to lead the Packers. However, the team as a whole has proved doubters wrong in another area, that being their “lack” of a bonified number one wide receiver.
The Green Bay Packers and Jordan Love Have a Well-Balanced Group of Wide Receivers
After the Packers traded Davante Adames to the Las Vegas Raiders following the 2021 NFL season, many believed that the passing game would suffer without a true number one wide receiver. And while the offense did struggle in 2022 (with Rodgers playing injured) and in early 2023 (with Love stacking reps and gaining experience), it is difficult to honestly say that this team needs a number one target like Adams was.
So far this season, Packers pass catchers have accounted for the following numbers:
- Jayden Reed- 52 receptions, 803 yards, six touchdowns
- Christian Watson- 29 receptions, 620 yards, two touchdowns
- Tucker Kraft- 44 receptions, 618 yards, seven touchdowns
- Romeo Doubs- 39 receptions, 543 yards, four touchdowns
- Josh Jacobs- 35 receptions, 340 yards, one touchdown
- Dontayvion Wicks- 30 receptions, 323 yards, five touchdowns
Unfortunately for Green Bay, as they head into their Week 17 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings, they will not have one of their top wide receivers. Watson is out with a bruised knee that he suffered in the Packers’ Week 16 win over the New Orleans Saints.
Due to this injury, and the youth of the wide receiver room, one NFL analyst things Green Bay should sign one particular veteran pass catcher to add some depth.
NFL Analyst Urges the Green Bay Packers to Sign Odell Beckham Jr.
In a recent article posted by Sporting News, Patrick McAvoy suggests that the Packers should sign free agent Odell Beckham Jr. to add some depth to their wide receiver room before the NFL Playoffs begin.
“Beckham is another player who was a superstar at one point. He hasn’t been able to stay healthy and isn’t the player he once was. But, he’s someone who could give Love another weapon at a cheap price,” McAvoy wrote.
Beckham played nine games for the Miami Dolphins this year and caught just nine passes for 55 yards. He did not record a touchdown reception.
While Beckham certainly has the star-power behind his name, he is far from the player that he once was (as McAvoy pointed out). What is more, one would have thought that any other team in need of wide receiver help would have signed him once he was released by the Dolphins.
Even though Watson is out against the Vikings, he only suffered a bruise. While this is a painful injury, it is not a long-term one. He will be back for Green Bay’s postseason run at the absolute latest.
What is more, it is difficult to imagine the 2024 version of OBJ being good enough to even get snaps over speedy and scrappy youngsters like Bo Melton and Malik Heath.
Of course, the Packers famously did make a run at trying to acquire the three-time Pro Bowler towards the end of the 2021 NFL season. However, he ended up signing with the Los Angeles Rams and, while he won the Super Bowl with them, tore his ACL.
The time of Green Bay being interested in adding OBJ has long passed.
