The Green Bay Packers are 2-1 after three weeks of football in the 2024 NFL season. It is quite an accomplishment already for the Packers, considering the immense challenge that the team is overcoming following the injury in Week 1 by quarterback Jordan Love. All of a sudden, the Packers are left relying on Malik Willis, who had just been signed by the team before the season, for their starting quarterback needs.
But instead of fizzling out, the Packers somehow are winning with Willis, leading to an unnamed head coach making an admission about how Green Bay is defying expectations set on the team after Love suffered the injury in Brazil.
Via Mike Sando of The Athletic:
“Everybody expected them to do what Miami did today, just bottom out,” a veteran coach said, referencing the Dolphins’ 24-3 defeat at Seattle without Tua Tagovailoa. “They adjusted to the quarterback and ran the hell out of the ball. You gotta give them credit for what they are doing. Can you sustain that long term? They don’t have to!”
Green Bay Packers have surprised people with success amid Jordan Love’s absence
In Willis’ first start with the Packers back in Week 2 (and at Lambeau Field no less), the Packers ran all over the Indianapolis Colts in a 16-10 victory. Green Bay followed that up with a 30-14 victory on the road against Willis’ former team, the Tennessee Titans. Willis looked more comfortable running the show in the Titans game.
The Packers have a date with the undefeated and NFC North division-leading Minnesota Vikings at home in Week 4. Love could finally make his return to action in that game, but even if Willis got called up to start again, Green Bay seems to have confidence in the former Auburn Tigers and Liberty Flames signal-caller.
