Green Bay Packers: NFL Analyst Suggests Signing Running Back Samaje Perine

The Green Bay Packers running back room is set for now for the 2024 season. Josh Jacobs, Emanuel Wilson, and rookie Marshawn Lloyd will be the running backs. A.J. Dillon was placed on season-ending injured reserve on Tuesday with a neck injury.

Samaje Perine and other running backs are available for the Packers to potentially sign if they want to fix the running back position before the season begins. Green Bay had Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon as its top two rushers a season ago and it will be different for them this season.

CBS Sports Tyler Sullivan Thinks That the Green Bay Packers Should Go After Samaje Perine

CBS Sports Tyler Sullivan talked about different NFL players who were cut on Tuesday. One of the players who was cut is running back Samaje Perine. He did not make the 53-man roster but has been with other NFL teams in the past.

Perine played with the Denver Broncos last season. He appeared in 17 games last season for Denver. Samaje Perine rushed for 238 yards on 53 carries and one touchdown, along with averaging 4.5 yards per rush. He is a factor in the passing game. Perine caught 50 passes for 455 yards receiving and zero touchdowns, along with averaging 9.1 yards per reception. He was targeted 56 times.

Tyler Sullivan said why Perine going to the Packers would make sense:

“With the news that running back AJ Dillon is gone for the year, this makes too much sense for Green Bay. Perine could be an ideal addition to a depleted backfield behind Josh Jacobs to work in passing down situations.”

    Sullivan also added about Perine:

“Perine continues to be a reliable pass-catching option out of the backfield even as he enters his age-29 season. While the Broncos are moving in a different direction with Javonte Williams and Jaleel McLaughlin, Perine could be a savvy addition for any team looking to bolster its backfield. Last season, he caught 50 of his 56 targets for 455 yards.”

Packers Like Using a Two-Running Back System

Green Bay Packers running back AJ Dillon (28) jumps into the stands for a Lambeau Leap after rushing for a fourth quarter touchdown against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, Dec. 27, 2020, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis. Dillon rushed for 124 yards and scored two touchdowns during a breakout performance for the rookie.

Josh Jacobs is going to be the lead running back, but head coach Matt LaFleur does not want to run him into the ground. Emanuel Wilson or rookie Marshawn Lloyd will get the other carries. Despite Wilson performing well in the preseason, Samaje Perine would be an upgrade as the backup running back.

Perine could be used on third downs. Imagine adding an element of the screen game with Samaje Perine to this offense. It would help out quarterback Jordan Love even more. Samaje Perine would be an interesting add to this football team if they went out and got him. However, the Packers would feel comfortable even if they didn’t get him.
