Green Bay Packers Insider Identifies Surprising Player Who Will Take Massive Leap in 2024

The Green Bay Packers are one of the NFL teams many fans are most excited to watch in 2024. After going 7-3 in their final 10 regular season games last year, Jordan Love and his dynamic young wide receivers led the Packers to an upset win over the Dallas Cowboys in the wild card round. They then took the San Francisco 49ers down to the wire before losing to them in the divisional round. Still, the young Packers proved that they were an up-and-coming force to be reckoned with.

During the offseason, the team decided to make a pretty significant change on defense by firing defensive coordinator Joe Barry. As a replacement, head coach Matt LaFleur decided to hire former Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley, who has garnered rave reviews from players since he arrived in Green Bay.

For the first time since before Dom Capers took over as the Packers’ defensive coordinator, Green Bay will utilize a 4-3 front instead of a 3-4. This schematic change that Hafley is implementing, along with a more aggressive approach, has players raving about how excited they are to be playing in this kind of system.

Last month, Pro Bowl defensive lineman Kenny Clark was quoted as saying:

“When we do drills, I’m like, ‘Damn.’ We’ve got like a big group of defensive linemen now. It’s going to be a lot different, but with this system, you’ve got to play like that.

“Now this is giving us a chance to shut all that other stuff off … just use your ability, go up the field and be disruptive. I just think with my get-off and how I am, I think it’s going to suit me well.”

Eric Stokes, too, had some high praise for the Packers’ new defensive coordinator last month:

“Ooooooh, I love Hafley … He just want you to go out there and have fun and just play 110 miles per hour and that’s what I love about Hafley … he always say, ‘Imma go ahead and take the bullet. You just go out there and just have fun and you just play.'”

The difference between Hafley and Barry, besides the number of defensive linemen and linebackers in their schemes, is that Barry always preached “read and react.” Hafley, on the other hand, wants his players to be aggressive and create havoc in the backfield.

It is a much more exciting brand of defense that does not require the players themselves to think too much. Instead, they can play based on their instincts and, in theory, will be much more effective.

Green Bay Packers Insider Thinks Quay Walker Will Thrive Under Jeff Hafley

In his weekly mailbag article, Packers reporter Wes Hodkiewicz was asked which player he thought would take a big jump from year two to year three. The fan suggested Devonte Wyatt, but Hodkiewicz had a different answer:

“Wyatt has come a long way, but my eyes are on Walker. He could have a huge impact this year in Hafley’s defense. Walker has every tool in the toolbox and matured so much the past two years. I think the stage is set for something special.”

Walker has accumulated over 100 total tackles in each of his first two seasons in the NFL. However, he often was criticized for poor reads and not being the best run defender. As mentioned, though, this should change under Hafley, who wants players to be more aggressive.

That is a style of play that best suits Walker. This is year, indeed, could be special for him and the defense as a whole.
