The Green Bay Packers are in the midst of offseason team activities in their attempt to prepare for the 2024 NFL season. Only recently, the voluntary full team phase of these activities started with 90/91 players in attendance (Robert Rochell was the only one not there, and he was excused for a personal matter).
Obviously, quarterback Jordan Love is among those in attendance. Entering his fifth year in the NFL and his second as the Packers’ starter under center, Love’s presence and example were praised by head coach Matt LaFleur.
It really is interesting to contrast Love’s choice to show up to these voluntary team activities while he is in the midst of contract extension negotiations with Aaron Rodgers‘ decision to skip these same activities in his final years in Green Bay. The presence of the starting quarterback can only help the team build chemistry and ensure that they are playing as well as possible come Week One.
Still, with the offseason well underway, there are still questions concerning when Love will sign his extension and how much he will be paid. Packers insider Matt Schneidman tackled one of these questions today on The Pat McAfee Show.
Green Bay Packers Insider Matt Schneidman Reveals Estimated Timeline for a Jordan Love Contract Extension
During the Wednesday (May 22) edition of The Pat McAfee Show, Schneidman was asked what he was hearing about the timetable for an extension for Jordan Love. He replied,
“So obviously the most important storyline right now is Jordan Love’s contract. He’s there. He’s been one of the guys that, I know Ty talked it about earlier, they had 90 out of 91 guys there. The one that wasn’t was excused for a personal matter.
“Matt LaFleur said this the best offseason attendance of any of his now six seasons here. Keisean Nixon, their All-Pro kick returner, said yesterday that it is just a reflection of the fact they feel like they let one slip away last year against the 49ers, and they want to come in here energized and ready to go because they feel like they can win a Super Bowl this year.
“So Jordan Love’s deal is going to get done. There’s no question about that. There is no rush right now, I would say, because it’s not like he’s holding out or anything. It’s just a matter of doing it right.
“Brian Gutekunst said this offseason he wasn’t going to rush it. I would be stunned if Jordan Love stepped onto a preseason game field without a new deal. So maybe this could be something that gets done right before training camp starts.”
While Schneidman has no specific date in mind, he does give some good estimate for when it could be done: the beginning of mandatory training camp, which starts in late July.
How Much Will the Green Bay Packers Have to Pay Jordan Love?
Recently, Detroit Lions starting quarterback Jared Goff received a four-year contract extension worth up to $212 million, or $53 million per season. This makes him the second-highest paid quarterback in the NFL behind Cincinnati Bengals’ star Joe Burrow. There are currently five quarterbacks making $50 million or more per season.
Before Goff’s extension, one former NFL agent believed that Love’s contract would pay him roughly $46-48 million per year. However, since that extension was signed, it is now believed that Love could become the sixth NFL quarterback to receive a contract with a $50+ million annual salary.
While that may seem like a lot of money now (and it is), the fact of the matter is that the price of quarterbacks is going to keep going up. In a year or two, whatever Green Bay is going to pay Love will end up looking like a bargain.
