The Green Bay Packers are one of the youngest and most unique teams in the NFL. They are unique because, unlike many other teams, they rely primarily on homegrown talent at key positions without diving too deep into free agency. Of course, they signed safety Xavier McKinney and running back Josh Jacobs this offseason, but they are exceptions to Green Bay’s typical approach to building their roster.
This does not mean, though, that fans have not wanted Green Bay to explore big-time signings or trades in the past. The latter years of Aaron Rodgers‘ tenure with the Packers saw many calling for Green Bay to sign, trade for, or draft a premier wide receiver, especially when Davante Adams was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders.
Instead, the Packers tried to replace Adams by drafting three wide receivers in 2022: Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, and Samori Toure. When Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb left after the 2022 season, they drafted three more: Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, and Grant DuBose.
The Green Bay Packers Do Not Have (or Need) a Wide Receiver One

Ever since Adams was traded, Green Bay has not had a true wide receiver one on its roster. In 2022, they tried to allow Lazard to fill that role, but he only had 60 receptions for 788 yards and six touchdowns. Still, he led the team in receptions and yards while Watson led the team in touchdown receptions.
Last season, with Jordan Love as the starting quarterback, no wide receiver eclipsed 1,000 yards. Reed led the team in receptions and yards while tying Doubs for the team lead in touchdown receptions.
Player | Receptions | Yards | Touchdowns |
Romeo Doubs | 59 | 674 | 8 |
Christian Watson | 28 | 422 | 5 |
Jayden Reed | 64 | 793 | 8 |
Dontayvion Wicks | 39 | 581 | 4 |
Malik Heath | 15 | 125 | 1 |
Bo Melton | 16 | 218 | 1 |
Luke Musgrave | 34 | 352 | 1 |
Tucker Kraft | 31 | 355 | 2 |
Ben Sims | 4 | 21 | 1 |
Despite none of their pass catchers being a true number one wide receiver, Love still amassed 4,159 yards passing, good for tenth in the NFL.
Green Bay Packers Fans React to a Ridiculous CeeDee Lamb Trade Proposal

The Packers, though, like the fact that any of their wide receivers can be the team’s top target on any given week. It certainly gives them an advantage against opposing defenses who are not able to gameplan for a specific number one pass catcher.
That has not stopped some NFL analysts from suggesting that the Packers go out and get a bonified wide receiver one, though. In a recent article posted on Bleacher Report, Brad Gagnon suggests Green Bay give up two of their top young pass catchers for Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb:
“The Green Bay Packers have a lot of good, though not great or well-established receivers. But in a huge year for Jordan Love and Co., the team might want to go bold with Lamb and sacrifice two of them because they’ve established the depth necessary to afford that swap.
“Essentially, they have become top-heavy.
“In this case, we’re presenting the idea of Dallas landing one primary slot guy to more directly replace Lamb (Jayden Reed) along with one of two talented but generally disappointing outside figures.”
Lamb, as fans may know, is in the midst of tense contract negotiations with Dallas as he seeks to become the highest paid wide receiver in the NFL. Gagnon argues that this trade will give Dallas two young wideouts and leave the Packers with Lamb’s contract issue.
Green Bay Packers Fans Were Irate at the CeeDee Lamb Trade Proposal

With virtually no chance that Green Bay would be able to afford Lamb’s next contract, this trade of two of their top young pass catcher (plus a second round pick) makes absolutely no sense for the Packers.
Their fans were quite outspoken about that fact:
Bleacher Report:
The #Packers should trade Christian Watson, Jayden Reed and a 2nd for CeeDee Lamb.

I won’t give this clickbait the link it doesn’t deserve, but holy shit. This is a proposed trade package on Bleacher Report for Cee Dee Lamb. Doubs OR Watson, plus Jayden Reed, PLUS a 2nd round pick for CeeDee Lamb.
It always amazes me that some NFL “pundits” still don’t… pic.twitter.com/klaFEiKqLi

The fact of the matter is that while Green Bay lacks a wide receiver one, they do not lack weapons in the passing game. They are far more likely to compete for a Super Bowl with the core that they have than if they traded half of their top four wideouts away for one guy, Lamb, who may only stay for a year.
