There was a time when former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre was one of the most beloved figures in franchise history. He helped return the Packers to relevance and Super Bowl glory after a 30-year championship draught and displayed a kind of reckless joy on the field that so many admired.
Unfortunately, his mystic has taken a severe blow in the days since his retirement. In 2021, he was named in a report that alleged that he and former Mississippi governor Phil Bryant (and others) misappropriated millions of dollars from the state’s welfare fund. Mississippi state auditor Shad White uncovered that $77 million were stolen from the fund from 2016-2019.
Former Governor Bryant has filed a lawsuit against the news organization that broke the story, but several individuals who were involved in the scandal have already pled guilty to fraud, including Favre’s business partner Jake Van Landingham, the founder of Prevacus.
Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Brett Favre’s Lawyer Was Ordered Off the Case
On July 11th, the judge presiding over the case issued an order that banned Favre’s lead attorney, Daniel Koevary, from continuing to represent the Hall of Fame quarterback in the case.
Per the court order:
“The most recent actions and filings by counsel appear to have been designed to be dilatory and not necessary for the representation of his client. The motions presented herein were deliberately and tacitly designed to undermine the authority of the Court and demonstrate either a misunderstanding of the proper procedures and processes of the rules and the laws of the State of Mississippi or an effort to manufacture issues with the Judiciary.”
Koevary was also given 10 days to pay back the costs associated with his inappropriate filings. It is not known if he did so.
The New York-based attorney, however, denied filing deceptive claims or motions.
Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Brett Favre Has Filed an Appeal of the Judge’s Order
A recent report posted on ESPN states that the former Packers quarterback has filed an appeal of the judge’s order in an effort to get his lead attorney back on the case.
The report reads in part:
“One of Favre’s Mississippi-based attorneys, Michael J. Bentley, wrote in the appeal Thursday that Peterson’s order causes irreparable harm.
“‘Neither Koevary nor other non-local attorneys did anything wrong in representing Favre, let alone anything warranting sidelining them and thereby impinging on Favre’s right and prejudicing Favre by depriving him of the full services of the attorneys with the greatest institutional knowledge of the matter.'”
Of course, it is yet to be seen if Favre and his team will win this appeal. However, based on how the case has gone against him so far, it does not look good for the Packers legend.
It should be noted that Favre has not been indicted on any criminal charges yet. If any charges do come, they will need to be within the next few weeks as the statute of limitations will run out later this year.
