The Green Bay Packers have very few questions surrounding their roster in 2024. Jordan Love proved to be more than good enough to take over after the trade from Aaron Rodgers. Green Bay’s young wide receivers and tight ends played so well in the second half of last season that many expect them to be among the NFL’s best pass catching groups this year. While there are singular positional battles on the offensive line, Green Bay feels good about the quality of depth that they have.
Defensively, new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley has players and fans excited for what the 2024 season will bring on his side of the ball. Additionally, the free agent signing of Xavier McKinney has given hope that Green Bay might have its best safety play since the days of Nick Collins. While there are some concerns externally about the cornerback position, the Packers have expressed their comfort in who they have.
Indeed, there is no question that the Packers already have their Week One starter at just about every position already on their roster.
Except, perhaps, at kicker.
Green Bay Packers Coaches Are Not Sure Their 2024 Kicker Is on Their Roster

Anders Carlson struggled as a rookie in 2023. While he made 81.8% of his field goal attempts (which is a higher percentage than Mason Crosby‘s career percentage), he only converted 87.2% if his extra point attempts.
The reason the Packers took a chance on Carlson was because of his leg strength. Indeed, he has the potential to be one of the best kickers in the NFL. However, Carlson was just 4/8 on field goals between 40-49 yards and 3/5 on kicks 50 or more yards.
Earlier this month, special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia was asked if Carlson, Greg Joseph, and Jack Podlesny will be the only kickers competing in training camp. Bisaccia responded, “It might be those three. Might be three other ones. It might be six.”
The comment was made partially in jest, but the message is clear: Carlson cannot have the same struggles he had last year in training camp. If he does, the Packers will be ready to move on from him.
Green Bay Packers Kicker Anders Carlson Thinks He Found a Solution

In a recent report by Jason Wilde of the Wisconsin State Journal, he reveals that Carlson believes he has found out why he struggled so mightily in 2023. He told Wilde that almost all of his kicks missed wide left, and that because most of his misses were for the same reason, he thinks he has fixed the problem:
“When I looked at the season after the season, most of my misses were kind of a similar kick miss. That’s, in a sense, a good thing, because it’s one (type of) miss that you can correct.
“Most of my field goal misses were just left when the wind was blowing right-to-left. So, especially when that wind’s right to left, just making sure that ball doesn’t come left.”
This is certainly something that Carlson will need to fix, especially since he is playing for Green Bay, which is known for its sometimes extreme weather conditions late in the season.
Of all of his missed field goals last year, two of them came in domes, as did two of his missed extra kicks. The wind did not affect any of those misses, so hopefully he is working on more than just making sure his kicks don’t go just left with the wind.
