The Green Bay Packers are in the midst of a disappointing 2023 season. While many didn’t expect the Packers to be Super Bow contenders in Jordan Love’s first full year under center, they also didn’t expect the offense to put up less than 20 points a game.
Over the course of the final six games of the season and into the 2024 off-season the Packers will certainly look for ways to improve their offense. One NFL analyst suggested that the team move on from one offensive play who hasn’t been making much of an impact on the team.
The Green Bay Packers Are Expected To Move On From 25-Year-Old Wide Receiver Samori Toure
Earlier this week, Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine proposed that the Packers let wide receiver Samori Toure go in order to free up a roster spot for another, potentially more impactful wide receiver next year:
Sometimes a player needs to be cut because of cap ramifications. Other times, it’s just time to clear a roster spot for someone better or more promising.
Cutting Samori Toure would qualify for the latter.
The former seventh-round pick should be applauded for finding a way to make the team in each of the past two seasons, but it’s becoming clear that the Packers have other young receivers who are worth investing in.
What the Packers need is a veteran who can come in and provide a spark for the passing game. There isn’t much money to be gained from cutting Toure, but it’s just about $1 million and they would have an open spot for a receiver on the active roster.
Toure started the season with a sizable role in the offense. He played 21, 23 and 33 snaps in the first three weeks. Since then, he’s played double digits just once more with 11 in Week 4.
Between Romeo Doubs, Christian Watson, Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks, the Packers really don’t have a need for keeping Toure on the roster.
Does It Make Sense For The Packers To Move On From Samori Toure?
So far Toure has appeared in 18 contests for the Packers, starting two of them. During that time frame he accumulated 10 receptions, 144 yards, and one touchdown. He has appeared in seven games in 2023 with no starts. He has also never had more than two receptions or 37 yards in a single game.
It is clear with his usage that the Packers do not have a ton of confidence in trotting Toure out there on an every down basis. Cutting him to possibly add a skill position player who would contribute more to the offense is not out of the question.
