Expectations are high for the Green Bay Packers defense going into 2023. Many thought it would be a top-five unit going into the 2022 season, however, that would not be the case. The Packers defense struggled mightily at times throughout the season, specifically against the run. Over the last five games of the season their play did improve, allowing just 17 points per game over that span. They are hoping that trend continues going into the 2023 season. One trade with the Dallas Cowboys could certainly do that.
Green Bay Packers Land Neville Gallimore From The Dallas Cowboys In Bold Trade Proposal
Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report mentioned how this trade would benefit both teams:
The Dallas Cowboys hoped they were getting a future long-term solution at defensive tackle when they took Neville Gallimore in the 2020 draft. The penetrating interior defender ran a 4.79 40-yard dash at 6’2″, 304 pounds.
Gallimore has not become a disruptive force through three seasons with the Cowboys. He has three sacks in three seasons and missed all but five games of the 2021 campaign with a dislocated elbow.
At this point, Gallimore has lost quite a bit of ground in the Cowboys defensive tackle group. Osa Odighizuwa has proved to be a more productive 3-technique. Mazi Smith was drafted in the first round this season, and Johnathan Hankins is the best run-stuffer they have. Quinton Bohanna is a more prototypical nose tackle with his 6’4″, 360-pound frame.
A fresh start for Gallimore and a little bit of draft compensation for the Cowboys could be best for everyone.
Rob Davis—who was the assistant head coach in Dallas when they drafted Gallimore—is now a front office executive for the Packers.
They have a need for interior defenders after losing both Dean Lowry and Jarran Reed in free agency. Gallimore would address their need for depth there while potentially turning his career around.
What Would This Do For The Packers Defensive Line?
A number of Packers players are hoping to make a big leap in their second season. Kingsley Enagbare, Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, and Quay Walker all played significant snaps in 2022. It is expected that the team will see some great improvements in the offseason. As part of a recent press conference, Joe Barry talked about Devonte Wyatt’s importance to the Packers. For Wyatt, defensive coordinator Joe Barry has some high but realistic expectations.
“Disruption. The sacks are what get talked about all the time, but just to be an all-around disruptive player. He’s got that quickness, he’s got that athleticism.”
Kenny Clark and Devonte Wyatt create for a significant 1-2 punch for the Packers defensive line. Adding Gallimore would create depth and a nasty rotation. This type of trade could be low risk high reward for the Packers.
