The Green Bay Packers had a slow free agency
The Green Bay Packers have had a pedestrian start to the free agency period. They brought in no elite signings for free agents. The Packers are working on a trade deal to send Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets. This offseason, the focus appears to be shedding bad contracts and moving on veteran players so the Packers can build their 2023 free agents and draft picks around Jordan Love. An analyst recently suggested where the Packers must focus their attention after free agency.
According to Trevor Sikkema with Pro Football Focus, they need a tight end, wide receiver, and secondary. Sikkema wrote a piece on what every NFL team needs after last week’s signing. They suggested the Packers needed the bulk of their help with pass catchers:
The Packers have been quiet this free agency period, as all focus is on the Aaron Rodgerssituation and getting the right deal done there. They do need some new talent at both tight end and wide receiver, though it isn’t a total desert in either category. Their lone defensive signing has been safety Tarvarius Moore, but they could look to draft another one in the later rounds.
The Packers need help at tight end and wide receiver. The Packers watched Robert Tonyan sign with the Chicago Bears. Michael Mayer could be a round-one grab for them in April. The rookie wide receiver trio of Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, and Samouri Toure are listed as the Packers starting wide receivers for 2023. The Packers could use a veteran among the group, but another draft pick wouldn’t be a terrible idea.

The Packers could use a safety, but other needs are more pressing. The secondary won’t be helped until they have a consistent, dominant pass rush. The Pass rush has been a problem during general manager Brian Guteskunst’s tenure.
The team watched a few veteran pass rushers go to other teams this offseason. The Packers would have a much faster rebuild if they could find a couple pass rushers to complement Rashan Gary and Preston Smith for 2023 and beyond.
