The concern for the backup quarterback position for the Green Bay Packers intensified following the team’s 27-2 preseason loss at the hands of the Denver Broncos on the road. In that game, the Packers quarterback duo of Michael Pratt and Sean Clifford combined for just 80 passing yards, zero touchdowns, and an interception on 16-of-26 completions. They were also sacked twice for a loss of 15 yards and came up with just a 52.6 passer rating.
The Packers have Jordan Love to take care of the QB1 business, and Green Bay has complete confidence in him after he proved in 2023 that he has what it takes to handle the team’s offense from under center. However, the backup position can still get better for Green Bay, as neither Sean Clifford nor Michael Pratt inspires much complacency for the Packers should anything happen to Love.
Enter Acme Packing Company, which suggested seven backup quarterbacks on other teams as potential targets for the Packers, including Case Keenum of the Houston Texans.
There is a backup quarterback battle in Houston between Case Keenum and Davis Mills with Keenum being the more senior of the two. Keenum had a career year way back in 2017 with the Vikings, and has never come close to replicating it, but has still made a nice career for himself as a backup.
He has hardly played since the pandemic, with just 142 attempts since the end of the 2019 season. This pre-season, it’s been noted by Houston media that Keenum’s arm is starting to lag now, so he may just not have enough juice to hang in the NFL anymore. Keenum is the most expensive option on the list, making $2.75M this year plus a total of $250k in per-game roster bonuses.
Keenum, who owns the NCAA FBS records for most career passing yards and pass completions, played backup Josh Allen during his time with the Buffalo Bills in 2022. Although Keenum has mostly been a backup in his career in the NFL, the former Houston Cougars star has plenty of experience as a starter as well.
At 36-years-old, Keenum’s already past his prime, but he can still be a reliable QB2 option with much more experience and proven ability to handle the offense as a starter than what the Packers have at the moment behind Love.
