Green Bay Packers: former head coach Mike McCarthy set to interview with his hometown team

Back in 2018, the Green Bay Packers made the decision to fire head coach Mike McCarthy before the season ended. A franchise legend who has a street named after him in the city of Green Bay, McCarthy’s time with the Packers was highlighted by a victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV and a vast amount of regular season success.

However, by the time 2018 rolled around, it was apparent to many that the time had come for the two sides to part ways. He was replaced, eventually, by Matt LaFleur, who has just agreed to a contract extension with the Packers following seven seasons of consistent regular season success and six appearances in the NFL Playoffs.

McCarthy, meanwhile, spent four seasons as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys before taking the 2025 NFL season off from coaching. Now, he is looking to get back in the game with an interview set for his hometown team’s coaching vacancy.

After former Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and his Steelers were eliminated from the NFL Playoffs last week, long-time head coach Mike Tomlin, who had been in the position for 19 years, stepped down.

Now, Pittsburgh is searching for just their fourth head coach since 1969, and they are considering McCarthy, a native of Western Pennsylvania, for the role:

Current Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley is also interviewing for the job, though it sounds like he is more likely to receive a head coaching offer from the Miami Dolphins.

In nine seasons with Green Bay, McCarthy went 125-77-2 in the regular season and 10-8 in the postseason. In five seasons with Dallas, he was 49-35 in the regular season, but just 1-3 in the regular season.
