With the Green Bay Packers made the surprising decision to move on from quarterback Kurt Benkert. Benkert was QB3 on the Packers roster for the entire 2021 season and into the 2022 off-season. Now that role will be help by QB Danny Etling. This move will land him on the practice squad–as long as another addition isn’t made. Danny Etling has had an interesting story of his own finding his way to the Packers.
QB Danny Etling:
Etling was signed by the Packers earlier this offseason, but OTAs wasn’t his first time in a Green Bay Packers uniform. When Jordan Love was on the reserve/COVID list in early December 2021, and Benkert was elevated to the 53-man roster, Etling was brought in for depth on the practice squad. He was then released once Love made his return.
Danny Etling was a seventh round pick in 2018 to the New England Patriots. After spending the 2018 season on the Patriots practice squad, he would have many new homes in a few short years. He actually made the move to wide receiver in 2019 before he was cut during training camp. Etling would then sign with Atlanta, where he spent 2019 on their practice squad as a quarterback. He then spent the 2020 season on Seattle’s and Minnesota’s practice squad, then a brief appearance in the CFL, Seattle (again), Denver, and the finally Green Bay in 2021.
Danny Etling’s College Career:
Etling began his college career at Purdue, where in 2014, he completed 55% of his passes on 162 attempts for 800 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions. He then transferred to LSU, where he had two years of playing time in 2016 and 2017. Over five years in college Danny Etling recorded:
- 563 completions / 973 pass attempts (57.9%)
- 7,076 passing yards
- 43 touchdowns
- 19 interceptions
As mentioned earlier, Etling will be QB3 as long as there isn’t another addition. With only Danny Etling, Aaron Rodgers, and Jordan Love on the roster at the moment, Etling will hold that title by default. It isn’t uncommon however for NFL teams to go into training camp and the preseason with four quarterbacks on the roster. With a 90 man roster, having four QBs spreads out the workload pretty evenly. We will see if the release of Kurt Benkert is a planned move to bring in someone else.
