The Green Bay Packers surprised their fans and the NFL world on Tuesday night. Most assumed that the team’s coaching staff changes had been completed in recent weeks. However, special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia, who has been immensely unpopular among fans, informed the Packers organization that he was stepping down from his position.

Bisaccia was also Green Bay’s assistant head coach.

When he was first hired by the Packers in 2022 following his stint as interim head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, fans were excited by the addition, convinced that he would turn around what has been a perennially poor special teams unit. Unfortunately, nothing changed much under Bisaccia, and Green Bay continued to field embarrassing special teams units.

The Green Bay Packers beat the Washington Commanders 27-18

As much as Bisaccia was unpopular among fans, he was even more beloved by the players and coaches with whom he worked. Indeed, head coach Matt LaFleur and multiple Packers players constantly defended him in the media.

With the news of Bisaccia’s resignation being released to the public, LaFleur made the following statement:

“While we are disappointed to lose a person and coach as valuable as Rich, we respect his decision to step down from the Packers. Rich was a tremendous resource to me and our entire coaching staff who had a profound impact on our players and our culture throughout the building. We can’t thank him enough for his contributions to our team over the last four years. We wish Rich, his wife, Jeanne, and the rest of their family all the best moving forward.”

It is worth noting that Bisaccia “stepped down” from his position with the Packers. He did not retire. As such, the 65-year-old long-time coach may find himself working for another team next season. That being said, nearly all special teams coordinator jobs are full, which means he would be taking an lesser role with whatever team hires him.
