The Green Bay Packers improved in many ways this past season. They went from a 9-8 record in 2023 to finishing 11-6 in 2024. Additionally, the defense took massive strides under new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley and the stellar play of Xavier McKinney and multiple rookie contributors.
However, the offense, and Jordan Love in particular, did not take as big of steps forward as the team had hoped. they would. In fact, it could be argued that many players, specifically the wide receivers, took a step back.
In his end of season press conference, head coach Matt LaFleur addressed these issues and stood up for his quarterback while admitting there are things he needs to work on during the offseason.
Green Bay Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur Addresses Jordan Love’s Struggles
During his end of season press conference, LaFleur was asked about Love’s struggles and how that played into Green Bay’s loss in the NFL Playoffs and their struggles against superior teams.
“Do I think he can play better? Absolutely. Do I think I can help him out and be better? Absolutely. Do I think we can play better around him? Absolutely.
“I just think it’s too much to put it on one person. I really do. I think collectively, we have to be better, and I expect better. We performed at a pretty high level a majority of the season and then took a dive. That’s why it feels, I’d say, different than a year ago.”
Love received a great deal of criticism following their loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card Round, especially since he threw three interceptions.
However, it is also worth noting that three of his wide receivers, Romeo Doubs, Dontayvions Wicks, and Jayden Reed, had drop percentages of 10% or higher and dropped 25 passes between them on the season.
This is what LaFleur is talking about when he said that the team needs to play better around his quarterback.
Love seemed to agree with this assessment, telling reporters:
“I think there’s obviously areas that I improved on, that the team improved on, and there’s some stuff I want to clean up, be better at, for sure. That’s the nature of the game. It’s never going to be perfect. There’s always going to be things to get better at, improve on.
“That’ll definitely be part of the offseason. Just go back, watch the games, make lists of things I can improve on and be better at. But I think we did some really good things as an offense, and I think there’s a lot of stuff that we left out there that we could have done a lot better.”
Catching the ball will certainly help, and Love will hopefully be more healthy in 2025 than he was in 2024 after suffering knee and groin injuries that kept him from being as mobile as he needs to be.
It will be exciting to see what the offense looks like next year with everyone healthy and, perhaps, a new top-tier wide receiver.
