The Green Bay Packers started off on the wrong foot in the 2024 NFL season, as they suffered a 34-29 defeat at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles last Friday.
There is no need to push the panic button for the Packers, but with Jordan Love injured and no reliable backup quarterback at the moment, there is an elevated level of concern about where Green Bay’s 2024 season is going.
Green Bay Packers’ Matt LaFleur speaks up about Week 1 loss to the Eagles
A lot of what the Packers need to do going forward is in the hands of head coach Matt LaFleur, whose ability to manage is being tested.LaFleur was honest in assessing the Packers’ ordeal in the Eagles game.
“There’s a lot to clean up,” LaFleur said after the game, per Matt Schneidman of The Athletic.
“It was definitely a sloppy game, I think, from us. There was some uncharacteristic things that we did as a staff, quite frankly, and that trickled down to our players. So ultimately, we’ve all got to look ourselves hard in the mirror and find ways to get better because tonight, obviously, wasn’t good enough.”
LaFleur also seemed to downplay the issues that arose in Week 1 while acknowledging the wrinkles.
“I think Week 1’s always — you just don’t know what you’re going to get, you know what I mean? It’s kind of a slop fest. Tonight was certainly that.”
The Packers were just 3-for-11 on third downs in Week 1 and committed 10 penalties for 71 yards. While they only committed just a turnover and forced the Eagles to commit three, the Packers still lost the possession battle, with Philly having possession of the ball most of the time.
Even without Love under center in Week 2, the Packers expect a better effort from themselves when they go up against the Indianapolis Colts on September 15 at Lambeau Field.
