The wait is finally over! According to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, the Green Bay Packers and head coach Matt LaFleur are in agreement on a multi-year contract extension. Prior to the extension, LaFleur was poised to enter the 2026 NFL season as a “lame duck” coach, with just one year left on his deal.

Part of the report also states that Green Bay is now working on contract extensions for general manager Brian Gutekunst and vice president Russ Ball.

Why did the Green Bay Packers give Matt LaFleur a contract extension

When the Packers lost to the Chicago Bears in the Wild Card round of the NFL Playoffs in what many have labeled an epic collapse, many wondered if the Packers would want to move on from LaFleur rather than extend him.

However, both LaFleur and the organization quickly stated their desire to move forward together and that they would likely work out an agreement this week.

But as each day passed, fans started to wonder if a deal really would get done. Finally, on Saturday night, the news dropped that it did:

The Packers and coach Matt LaFleur have agreed to terms on a multiyear contract extension, sources say.

As can be seen in the post above, LaFleur is 76-40-1 in his seven seasons as Green Bay’s head coach. Additionally, the Packers have made the NFL Playoffs in six of his seven seasons including two trips to the NFC Championship Game.

LaFleur has taken Green Bay to the postseason in each of the last three seasons despite having the youngest roster in the league in each year.

Clearly, the Packers believe that he can take them to the next level as their roster continues to mature and improve under his leadership.
