After a surprising run last season, the Green Bay Packers are hoping to exceed their accomplishments in the upcoming campaign. Their preseason loss against the Denver Broncos, though, has prompted head coach Matt LaFleur to give his honest take on the team.
In a preseason matchup, the Packers fell to Denver by a score of 27-2. The game was dominated by the Broncos, who played their starters early and jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter.
The Packers struggled to generate offense, managing just 69 total yards in the first half and 168 for the game. Quarterback Sean Clifford threw an interception that led to a Denver touchdown before halftime, and quarterback Michael Pratt lost the ball on a strip-sack, leading to a Broncos field goal in the third quarter.
The Packers finally got on the board with a safety by defensive lineman Zach Morton, but their only promising offensive drive ended in a missed field goal. Clifford finished 6-of-10 for 43 yards with the interception, while Pratt was 10-of-16 for 52 yards.
The Broncos extended their lead to 27-2 in the fourth quarter with a touchdown pass, and the Packers were unable to mount a comeback, going three-and-out on their final drives. Overall, it was a rough night for the Packers’ reserve units as they fell to the Broncos in the preseason.
Green Bay Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur Drops Honest Review of Team Loss to Denver Broncos
After the game, LaFleur spoke to reporters about their brutal loss to the Broncos. In a tweet shared by Ryan Wood on X, the Packers head coach shed some light on what happened to the team.
“Matt LaFleur’s summation of the #Packers‘ trip to Denver: “That was a long night. I was hoping our guys would come out with more strain, effort, grit after kind of getting humbled the other day in practice. To have it happen again, not where we want to be,” Wood tweeted.
The Broncos, meanwhile, saw rookie quarterback Bo Nix impress by completing eight of nine passes for 80 yards and a touchdown in the preseason win over the Packers. Denver fans are hyping Nix as the team’s QB1 ahead of the regular season, amid a battle with Zach Wilson and Jared Stidham.
It remains to be seen whether the Packers can perform better during the regular season than their recent game against the Broncos or not. If it’s trending towards the latter, expect LaFleur to push the Jordan Love-team more on the field.
