The Green Bay Packers’ last training camp had a battle for the backup quarterback job between Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt. Neither of those quarterbacks made the team and instead, Green Bay traded for Tennessee Titans quarterback Malik Willis.
It was a surprise when Green Bay traded for Willis last year to be Jordan Love’s backup. Well, Malik Willis was more reliable for the Packers than a lot of people thought he would be. There is a chance that some teams will call the Packers this offseason about a potential trade for Willis.
Fansided Writer Rucker Haringey Thinks That Green Bay Packers Quarterback Malik Willis Could Be Trade Bait This Offseason
Fansided.com writer Rucker Haringey wrote about three potential storylines to watch for this offseason with the Green Bay Packers. One of the storylines this offseason could be that backup quarterback Malik Willis could be trade bait. There is no doubt there are some teams who will need a starting quarterback for the 2025 NFL season.
It would be hard to believe that the Packers would want to move off of Willis this offseason and then have to search for a new backup quarterback for the 2025 NFL season. Rucker said:
“Most NFL fans viewed the Packers’ decision to trade for Malik Willis last year as more of a curiosity than a differecne-making move. The former third-round pick changed the complexison of his career by winning two starts while Love was on the sidelines due to injury.
AZ Sports speculates that Willis could get a third or fourth-round pick in return if the Packers were to trade him this offseason. That’s a modest return for a quarterback who will make less than $2 million on his rookie contract next year.
The Packers’ front office should hold out for more if they’re going to deal their backup quarterback. They should not entertain trading Willis for anything less than a second round pick. Keeping him for another year as a cheap backup option is hardly a bad plan. The team might not have been able to qualify for the postseason at all without Willis’ stellar backup play this year.
The one unknown here is just how satisfied Willis might be to spend another year as a backup in Green Bay. If he’s smart, he will stay put and hit the open market as an intriguing free agent in 12 months time. If he’s too impatient, he might end up in another bad situation via trade. His time with the Titans should have taught him just how important it is to be with a good organization.”
If general manager Brian Gutekunst was offered mid-round draft picks for quarterback Malik Willis, there is a chance that he would accept that trade. It would be interesting to see how many teams will call the Packers this offseason to see if he is available for a trade or not.
Season Stats
Last season, Willis completed 74.1% of his passes for 550 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions. He also rushed for 138 yards on 20 carries and one touchdown, along with averaging 6.9 yards per carry.
Malik Willis looked like he couldn’t be an NFL quarterback with the Tennessee Titans, but looked like he could play quarterback in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers and head coach Matt LaFleur. If Willis gets traded from Green Bay to a team that needs a starting quarterback for the 2025 NFL season, it would be a major surprise also.
