Ask any Green Bay Packers fan about the team’s chances before their Week 2 duel against the Indianapolis Colts, they would have probably told you that they didn’t feel confident about their team.
Not only did their Week 1 loss against the Philadelphia Eagles show the holes in their defense, but they’re also without their starting QB due to an injury on his knee. It would be normal for any fan to feel a bit down about getting a win against Philly.
However, it turned out fine as Malik Willis lived up to expectations and did enough to lead the Packers to a hard-fought 16-10 win. He didn’t commit many errors that could have cost the team the game, which many fans are probably thankful for.
One quarterback who has been in the same situation talked about the pressures that came with the job and what Willis could do to help his team win.
Brian Hoyer talked about pressures Malik Willis faced before solid start for the Green Bay Packers
Brandon Hoyer shared that he has been in a situation similar to what Willis faced before the game. He talked about his approach to things and what he thinks Willis is doing to make himself ready for the game.
Per Sports Illustrated’s Bill Huber:
“I think they’re going to go through the week and say, ‘OK, here’s the game plan,’ and then on Friday after practice you sit down and you say, ‘All right, Malik, which plays do you like best?’” Hoyer said on Friday. “It may be limited, but that’s what you have to do to make sure that he’s comfortable out there.”
“For me, in that situation, I was cramming so much about just learning the offense that I didn’t really put too much weight into studying the defense, so to speak. There’s only so much bandwidth you have. You’ve got to physically be ready to play and you don’t want to be burning the midnight oil doing those things. I think at a certain point, you say, ‘I’ll try to nail down knowing this offense as best as I can and the defense is a defense, and I’ll go out there and play and go out there and react.
“I think the priority is obviously knowing what you’re doing first and then from there then worrying about what the other team’s doing.”
Willis’ performance against the Colts show that he did the right things that Hoyer talked about. He completed 12 of his 14 pass attempts for 122 yards and one touchdown while rushing six times for 41 yards.
While it’s still early days, Malik Willis has shown that he’s more than capable to play in the NFL, and Green Bay Packers fans hope that his performance will remain good enough until Jordan Love returns.
