The Green Bay Packers made their first pick in the post-Aaron Rodgers era. Many thought that the Packers would focus on the offense but GM Brian Gutekunst decided to go defense again. The Green Bay Packers have selected Lukas Van Ness, the defensive edge out of Iowa with their first-round pick.
Green Bay Packers Select Lukas Van Ness
Van Ness has been on the Packers’ radar for a while. Iowa’s defense was one of the top ones in the nation and the Packers have a need at the edge position. Preston Smith is getting up there in age and Rashan Gary needs another person to help pressure the quarterback. This is not to mention that Kingsley Enagbare showed some promise last season. The Packers should have a pass rush that is set for the future.

Why Not Offense?
I don’t hate not taking a tight end there but Jaxon Smith-Nijgba was there for the taking. This would’ve been a perfect slot receiver for the Packers. The team has pumped so much first-round talent into this defense and it hasn’t produced anything. Maybe this is the one that pushes them over the edge but the offense needs some help. The good news is that the Packers have plenty of second and third-round picks and there is some good value in those rounds.
