The Green Bay Packers are five days away from the start of a new era. Jordan Love is the new face of the franchise and this young Packers team is hungry to prove the doubters wrong. Both sides of the ball will have interesting storylines to watch. The offense is young, fast, and talented. However, their youth means inexperience.
Their defense is returning a lot of high-caliber players and, just like entering the 2022 season, are expected to be a top unit in the league this year. While 2022 was a disappointment for the defense, they ended the season on a strong note allowing just 17 points per game over the last 5 games. There is one veteran free agent who could help continue that momentum into 2023.
Green Bay Packers Urged To Target Cornerback Bryce Callahan Prior To Week One

I still don’t understand why a healthy Bryce Callahan is still sitting in free agency. He played a career high in games last year with the Los Angeles Chargers. He picked off a career-high three passes. He’s proven to be one of the most effective nickel cornerbacks in the NFL when healthy.
Even just for additional depth and a starter if need be in the secondary, I think the Packers would benefit by having a player like Callahan around. Perhaps he’s waiting for a clearer path at snaps, but Callahan is one of the more confusingly available free agents at this point given how starved teams are for depth at corner.
As a slot cornerback, Callahan is undoubtedly very good, as he has started 56 of 81 games. His 11 starts last season were a career high for him. He has intercepted nine passes over the course of his career.
As a member of the Chicago Bears in 2020, he had two picks, but most importantly, he held opposing quarterbacks to a passer rating of 47.8 when they targeted him (per Pro Football Reference). That season was the best of his career to date.
The Packers my have some growing pains at slot corner this year. Keisean Nixon, the legendary return man in Green Bay, has been taking reps at slot all preseason. When Eric Stokes comes back from injury (which won’t be until at least week five) the cornerback depth will improve dramatically.
Either way, signing a veteran slot corner with so much experience could be huge for this defense.
