Green Bay Packers legend Gilbert Brown has a segment on The Earl Ingram Show called “Under the Helmet with the Gravedigger.” On Monday, he joined Ingram to discuss his playing career. Later in the show, Brown called his good friend and former teammate Santana Dotson who joined to help discuss the Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles.
Gilbert Brown Explains Why He Had So Few Sacks in His Career with the Green Bay Packers
At the beginning of the show, host Earl Ingram asked Gilbert Brown why he only had seven career sacks. Gilbert’s response was both hilarious and eye opening:
“I played with Reggie White. 200 sacks. I played with Santana Dotson. 75 to 85 sacks. I played with Sean Jones. 100+ sacks. How in the world am I going to get a sack when everyone else is stealing them?! My job was to make them look pretty and to stop the run. And I did that!”
So often, the nose guard position is taken for granted by casual fans. While Brown did not amass huge sack numbers, he was instrumental in stopping the run and eating up blocks to free up other defensive players. After discussing the sack numbers, Gilbert explained how he helped Green Bay’s linebackers:
“As a nose guard you got to make stuff happen. We are like an offensive lineman. We got to keep the linebackers clean. So it’s like, you make tackles and sacks when you can.”
Ingram then asked him to clarify what he meant by keeping linebackers clean:
“Well that means by me taking on double teams and triple teams so that the linebackers can flow from left to right, up and back clean. Because the offensive lineman’s job, guards especially, is to get up to the linebacker. And if you’re a good nose tackle, you’re not going to let that happen.”
“So the linebacker is a glamor position?” Ingram asked. “Oh he’s a pretty boy, too. Yeah, I had linebackers I made look preeeetay!”
Gilbert Brown and Santana Dotson Answer Questions Regarding Super Bowl LVII
Both Gilbert Brown and Santana Dotson know a thing or two about playing and winning a Super Bowl. Both players were key cogs on the Super Bowl XXXI winning Green Bay Packers team. Later in the show, Gilbert called Santana to join him in answering listener questions about their views and takeaways from the most recent Super Bowl.
Host Earl Ingram started by talking about how it seems like Gilbert and Santana are more than just friends on the football field. “He’s more of a lifelong friend, right?” he asked.
“Yeah, Santana is like that mole on your back that you can’t get rid of!”
The first called was actually a Detroit Lions fan who started out by quipping that he remembers seeing Santana and Gilbert in some Barry Sanders highlights.
“First of all, we forgot your name because you didn’t make no sense. Second of all, you forget we are the only team that held Barry Sanders negative yards, FOOL! And also, when me and Santana were playing, we ain’t never lost to the Lions at Lambeau Field. Now what were you saying?”
The caller spent most of his time trying to take digs at Gilbert and Santana, but in the process made a good point about how the false start prior to Jalen Hurts’ fumble in the Super Bowl stuck out as a big play. At the time of the false start, and then the fumble, the Eagles were rolling and it seemed like they could not be stopped,
Dotson responded to that point:
“He’s exactly right, Earl. You know, that’s part of the reflection, too, as a player, you think back at the play as the offensive lineman. I think it was the right guard who jumped. So he’s looking at that today thinking ‘If I had just sat still, not been able to move, sat in my stance. We would have been in third one, fourth and one, and that fumble doesn’t even happen.’ I guarantee no one feels worse than he does.”
The entire segment was both insightful and hilarious. What is recorded above is just a small, small snippet of the jokes and wisdom conveyed by both Gilbert and Santana. The entire interview can be heard in the link above.
