The Green Bay Packers are looking to win their Week 1 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday night in Brazil. During the offseason, Green Bay made changes to the running back position. They signed Josh Jacobs and released Aaron Jones.
The Packers also drafted Marshawn Lloyd from USC in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft. A.J. Dillon was also re-signed to a one-year deal, but he was placed on injured reserve because of a neck injury.
Bleacher Report Suggests That the Green Bay Packers Sign Running Back Latavius Murray Before the Start Of the 2024 Season
Latavius Murray has rushed for 6,552 yards in his NFL career. A season ago, he was with the Buffalo Bills. With Buffalo, Murray rushed for 300 yards on 79 carries and four touchdowns, along with averaging 3.8 yards per rush. He also caught 17 passes for 119 yards receiving and zero touchdowns, along with averaging 7.0 yards per catch.
Bleacher Report Scouting Department suggested to each NFL team before the start of the 2024 season how to improve the roster. They think that the Green Bay Packers should sign free-agent running back Latavius Murray. Bleacher Report said:
“With AJ Dillon getting placed on season-ending injured reserve, the Packers might want to explore bringing in another veteran running back behind Josh Jacobs. While Murray’s best years are behind him, the 34-year-old can be a productive backup after racking up 419 yards from scrimmage and four touchdowns for the Bills last season.”
Murray is 34 years old. He would no doubt bring a veteran presence to the Green Bay Packers locker room.
Marshawn Lloyd and Emanuel Wilson Will Try and Be RB2
If the Packers were to sign Latavius Murray, it would be taking away carries from either Marshawn Lloyd or Emanuel Wilson. Lloyd or Wilson will look to be the number two running back behind Josh Jacobs for the 2024 season.
It is important to have depth in the running back position. Had A.J. Dillon been healthy, would Green Bay have kept four running backs on the roster? Who knows, but Latavius Murray would be a nice veteran presence in the locker room for the younger running backs. The plan, in the long run, is for Marshawn Lloyd to be the second running back behind Josh Jacobs.
