The Green Bay Packers, for the first time in several years, have tens of millions of salary cap space to work with during the offseason. This is because the dead cap hits of former stars Aaron Rodgers and David Bakhtiari are finally off the books. Furthermore, they can create more cap space by releasing certain players (i.e. Jaire Alexander) and restructuring the contracts of others (i.e. Rashan Gary).
It is fortunate that Green Bay suddenly is flush with cash to spend because there are a plethora of needs on the roster that need to be addressed. What is more, they need to be addressed by adding veteran players, not just young draft picks.
The Green Bay Packers Need Veterans on Offense and Defense

Over the last couple of seasons, the Packers have been the youngest team in the NFL. And while they have made the postseason in each of the last two years, they have certainly played like the league’s youngest team, committing foolish penalties and making other mistakes attributed to their lack of experience.
Of course, the position that most fans have been focusing on is the wide receiver position. Christian Watson will be out for most (if not all) of 2025 due to suffering a torn ACL in Week 18 against the Chicago Bears. Green Bay’s other top three wide receivers all had drop percentages between 10-12&%, leaving many to conclude that the Packers should pursue a veteran pass catcher, preferably one that can become the go-to player in the passing game.
That being said, the more glaring holes on the roster on the defensive side of the ball. This is particularly true on the defensive line where Green Bay’s pass rushers ranked near the bottom in the NFL in pressure rate. As such, some experts believe the Packers will look to add a big name free agent to the position group.
NFL Analyst Names the Green Bay Packers as the Best Fit for Khalil Mack in Free Agency

Last offseason, the Packers shocked many analysts and fans by signing safety Xavier McKinney, easily the best player at his position on the market. One specific analyst, though, had Green Bay listed as the perfect landing spot of McKinney months before the signing happened.
And now, he has them listed as the best destination for Khalil Mack, a nine-time Pro Bowler who has played for the Las Angeles Chargers for the last three years.
Matt Bowen of ESPN writes of Mack, his ninth-best free agent on the market, and the Packers:
“The Packers adding Mack to pair with Rashan Gary would boost their pass rush off the edges. Mack had six sacks and 41 pressures in 2024 with the Chargers. And even though he’s turning 34 this week, he’s still a three-down force with the steady play speed to heat up the pocket.”
While his age may be of concern, Bowen points out that he has not really shown any signs of slowing down. A Pro Bowler in each of the last three seasons, Mack could give a massive boost to the pass rush, one of the weakest parts of Green Bay’s defense last season.
Interestingly, this kind of signing would spark many memories of when the Packers brought in now Pro Football Hall of Famer Julius Peppers. Both are former Bears players that signed/could sign with Green Bay in an effort to add a Super Bowl win to their brilliant resumes.
Peppers was also 34 when he signed with the Packers.
